Eagles from page 4
Lady Eagles scored 22 points to open the
game and went on to derail the Cardinals
66-21. El Segundo had its best shooting night
of the season, sinking 91 percent of its free
throws and 40 percent on three-pointers. Noble
led the Eagles with 19 points, while Jordyn
Marconet added eight points and led her team
with 11 rebounds.
El Segundo faced Santa Monica on the road
yesterday in a key matchup. The team returns
home Friday night at 6 p.m. to host Hawthorne
and then Beverly Hills on Wednesday.
Eagles Lose Long-Range
Thriller, but Wins in OT
The Eagles played two heart-stopping games
against teams they’ve had problems defeating.
They fell to Culver City 59-56 in a game that
featured 12 made 3-pointers by the Centaurs
and nine by the Eagles. Against Lawndale,
the Eagles needed overtime to defeat the
Cardinals 45-43.
The Culver City Centaurs have played a
demanding non-league schedule. They play to
their strength, which is their three-point shooting.
Against the Eagles, Tyler Wiley connected
on five three-pointers, while Ryan Blackman
sank four more. Still the Eagles competed
with the Centaurs with their own long-range
game. Culver City held a 39-24 lead entering
the second half before Miles Jones and Dylan
Aubert brought their team back with their
long-range jumpers. Aubert’s three-pointer cut
the lead to 39-34 as the Eagles reeled off 10
straight points. El Segundo toughened up its
defense while inching back into the game. In
the closing moments, the Eagles trailed 59-56
with nine seconds left. Miles Jones’ jumper
to tie the game drew a challenge from the
Centaur defense. The shot attempt hit the rim
and bounced away.
The win against Lawndale was an exciting
one that had a full gym on its feet throughout
the second half and overtime. This was a classic
high school basketball game that featured two
teams playing passionate and physical defense.
After El Segundo trailed for most of the first
quarter, Diangelo Romano gave the Eagles the
lead with a 15-foot jumper. In the second quarter,
Jones connected on back-to-back jumpers to
give El Segundo a 24-20 lead. In the second
half, each team’s defense was stifling. This led
to poor shot attempts and missed baskets. At
one point, the two teams were tied at 36-36
for over three minutes of the fourth quarter.
Aubert then got free for a layup as the shot
clock dwindled down to give El Segundo a
38-36 lead. Lawndale’s Ben Monza tied the
game with 37 seconds left and the game went
into overtime.
Jones’ two free throws made it 40-38, but
Lawndale tied the game with just over a minute
remaining. Michael Lynch had an inbounds
layup and Jones made two free throws for a
44-40 lead. Monza hit a three-pointer to make
it a one-point game. Lynch was fouled down
the stretch and sank one of two free throws
for the final 45-43 score.
The Eagles host Hawthorne Friday night at
7:30 p.m. and Beverly Hills next Wednesday
night at 7:30 p.m.
Girls Water Polo Team
Makes a Statement
When El Segundo knocked off Ocean League
perennial powerhouse Santa Monica 8-5, it
gave the Lady Eagles the edge on a potential
Ocean League title. These two teams have
ruled the Ocean League for seasons and this
year should be no exception. El Segundo shut
out the Vikings in the first period thanks to a
tough defense and the play of goalie Sophia
Caravello. Christina Mullane scored the only
goal of the first quarter to give El Segundo the
lead. In the second quarter, Mullane blasted in
two more goals and Jenna Olson added another
as the Lady Eagles took a 4-3 lead at halftime.
Santa Monica is a big, physical team and El
Segundo matched up well with a third period
defense that locked down an aggressive Viking
offensive set. Jenna Olson got free on two goals,
while Christina Grenke and Christina Mullane
each scored to make it 8-4. The Vikings would
find the net midway through the fourth period
for the only goal of the quarter.
The Lady Eagles were led by Mullane’s four
goals and Olson, who tallied three. Grenkes
added a third period goal, while Caravello had
11 saves in the cage.
El Segundo won the 5Th Annual Lady Brahmas
Winter Classic Tournament by defeating La
Habra 11-3, Troy 10-7 and Sunny Hills 6-1. •
Ben Peterson sinks a long-range jumper in the second half of the
Eagles’ overtime win against Lawndale.
