time the L.A. Kings organization will have
visited a TUSD campus and this time they
will bring an outdoor hockey rink for students
to play, with adult chaperones supporting the
students as needed. “This is a fun event that
reinforces the hockey practice students have
been participating in during their regular
adaptive physical education time,” states
the staff report. “Students will be able to
practice their eye-hand coordination, accuracy
and focus skills, partner and teamwork
skills, applying force to an object and more
importantly, gain confidence.”
While each SDC student will be provided
with adequate supervision throughout the
event, parent permission slips will be required
for each student to participate. The event will
come at no cost to TUSD.
City Council from front page
Also on Tuesday, Council members approved
funding and a contract services
agreement with C.S. Legacy Construction, Inc.
for construction of a Splash Pad at Charles
Wilson Park in the amount of $963,463.
“The project is on a tight timeline due to
the grant funding provided by the County
of Los Angeles requiring a target completion
date of June 30, 2018,” states the staff
report signed by General Services Director
Sheryl Ballew.
With funds being made available from the
FEAP 926-Pond Retrofit Project, the Parks and
Recreation Open Space Fund and the Parks
and Recreation Facilities Fund, in addition
to Proposition A Grant funds, the project is
expected to cost $1,087,672. In August 2016,
the Council approved an agreement with
landscape architectural firm Hirsch and
Associates to design the splash pad and a
smaller version of the existing pond, which
was drained and fenced in September 2015.
The splash pad is a 3,000-square foot concrete
circle with all of the water jets located below
ground. Park patrons will press a button that
turns on random water spray patterns for a
limited period of time. The water drains into
some filters and is deposited into a storage tank
-- no different from a pool filtration system.
C.S. Legacy Construction, Inc. was one
of five companies to attend a job walk, but
was the only visiting company to submit a
proposal. Since the response was to an RFP
process and not a bid, the City was able to
negotiate the proposal price from the original
$1,073,354 down to $892,095. •
