Agreement with Community Colleges
By Cristian Vasquez
A unanimous vote from members of the
Torrance School Board approved an articulation
agreement between the Torrance Unified
School District (TUSD), El Camino College,
Los Angeles Harbor College and Cerritos
College during the 2018-2019 and 2019-
2010 school years. Through the approved
agreement all TUSD students enrolled in
the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) course,
Introduction to Engineering Design (IED),
would be eligible to receive college credit
at the participating community colleges for
the articulated course. However, each
TUSD student will be required to meet all
the eligibility requirements to receive college
credit under this agreement.
Typical articulation agreements are formalized
between various state community colleges
and four-year universities, or between local
school districts and community colleges. In
both scenarios, the schools provide enrollment
in college-level courses to students who will
also receive credit in their next schooling level.
PLTW provides students with direct, handson
experiences that are modeled based on
real-world challenges. The Introduction to
Engineering Design program exposes students
into a variety of tasks that engineers
must carry out in their careers, in hopes of
providing new career paths while developing
engineering knowledge and skills. The IED
program also groups students in teams so
they may eventually design and test solutions.
This is expected to allow the students to
develop workforce skills such as collaboration,
critical thinking and communication.
This articulation agreement will not cost the
school district any money.
An agreement between TUSD and Northrop
Grumman will provide North High School
seniors with a unique opportunity to be part
of a 17-week internship. With the School
Board’s approval, North High seniors will be
able to apply for the unpaid internship, which
will run from Feb. 8 to May 31, 2018. This
experience is different from other programs
with the aerospace firm in that the seniors
selected for the internship will be required to
come to Northrop Grumman. In addition, the
internship will be an out-of-class opportunity
that will translate to actual working experience
(four days a week, two hours each day).
“The purpose of this program is to provide
high school seniors with on-the-job STEMrelated
training to support students to acquire
STEM work experience, skills and talents,
and practical knowledge through Northrop
Grumman Corporation,” said the staff report.
The internship will provide students with
direct mentorship by a Northrop Grumman
engineer, hands-on training in a possible future
career choice, and the opportunity of learning
in a real-world major global corporation.
Students selected will also receive classes in
Business Ethics, Business Etiquette and site
tours. They will also develop work ethics,
time management and teamwork skills and
receive a certificate of completion, as well as
a $300 scholarship upon proof of continued
post-secondary education. Interns will also
be given an opportunity to compete for one
of 10 scholarships of $1500 (only available
to HIP participants). The internship is offered
at no cost to TUSD.
The Los Angeles Kings hockey team and
radio commentator Daryl Evans have been
given the go-ahead to visit Arnold Elementary
School by School Board members. Without
a set date for the visit, Monday night’s decision
tentatively sets the event for some time
between February and March.
Evans and the team will host a one-day,
hands-on event for the school’s Special Day
Class (SDC) program. This is not the first
