Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of
Good Neighbors from
an Old Guy named
Norb Huber
Vote YES on H
It’s a no brainer. The City
of Hawthorne is not bringing
in enough revenue to meet the
demands for city services. We
are running a deficit. It is not due
to mismanagement or corruption. It’s due to
the lack of tax revenue generated within our
city. We do not have big corporations that
sell products that generates tax revenue. So,
what is Measure HH? It is simply a very
small sales tax increase on non-food items.
If you buy a big screen television at Costco-
Hawthorne and pay $400 retail price, then
the increase in sales tax would be simply
$3. For every $100 you will pay 75 cents
more. Most of our customers at Costco and
Home Depot don’t live in the City. So we,
the residents, will only being paying for
only 40% of the tax increase. There is no
question that the added income will help
our city. Use your brain, vote YES. Help
Hawthorne move forward.
Hawthorne Trivia
While you watch the Dodgers win the
world championship and as you sip on
your cold ones to stay cool, here is some
Hawthorne trivia to digest. (Email me your
answers. The first person to get them all
correct will have the opportunity to enjoy a
cold one with the City Clerk. Special note:
Family members are not eligible to win
since I really don’t care to share a cold one
with my biggest critics.) What was the name
of the street that Marilyn Monroe lived on
when she lived in Hawthorne? What street
did Jim Thorpe live on in Hawthorne? What
family lived on 119th Street? What single
family housing tract was built first Holly
Glen or Holly Park? At what location in
Hawthorne did Jack Northrop start his company?
What year was the first graduating
class from Hawthorne High School? Who
came up with the name Hawthorne? When
you drop the e from Hawthorne what do
you spell and what does it refer to? What
year was the current city hall built? What
organization had a contest to come up with
the city motto, City of Good Neighbors?
What is a wig-wag and where in Hawthorne
is one working? Good Luck! I
will share the answers with all
five of you next week.

Veterans Day AfterParty
November 11th is Veterans Day and the
Veteran’s Commission for the City of Hawthorne

Street in Holly Glen. There will be a brief
program and then the party will begin with a
great rock band and dancing. Come celebrate
our veterans on their day. The program will
begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 11.
Parking
When I speak with neighbors and friends
their number one complaint is parking or
the lack there of on residential streets. I
have spoken out several times at city council
meetings. I have written a couple of
articles on this problem. There really doesn’t
seem to be any real good solutions. Neighboring
cities have similar parking problems.
Some of these cities have permit parking
or restricted zone parking. We have several
residents come to the city council to speak
about their individual parking problems. It
gets to be a safety issue when people have
to walk several blocks at night just to get
home. If I had the answer I would certainly
share it with you and the council. I feel your
pain. I understand your frustration. It has
become a “parking war” on many of our
streets. Having a cold one will not solve this
problem but it make you feel a little better
about life in our city. •

Film Review
A Twisted Journey of Revenge
from Visionary Yorgos Lanthimos
By Morgan Rojas for cinemacy.com
Yorgos Lanthimos set the bar high after
the 2015 release of his dystopian romance/
drama The Lobster that landed on multiple
“Best Of” lists and was considered a worldwide
phenomenon for its originality and satirical
tones. The Greek-born director takes the audience
down a darker path in The Killing of a
Sacred Deer. Rejoining forces with Colin Farrell,
Sacred Deer is a destructive psychological
thriller born out of revenge. It shows just how
easily one’s life can turn upside down when
put in a desperate situation.
The film opens on an extreme close-up of an
open heart surgery and a slow zoom out reveals
Dr. Steven Murphy (Farrell) dressed in full-body
scrubs. The renowned cardiovascular surgeon is
meticulous about his work, both professionally
and in his suburban home life. He criticizes his
son Bob (Sunny Suljic) about the length of his
hair and sets social restrictions for his daughter
Kim (Raffey Cassidy) while admiring the perfection
of his ophthalmologist wife, Anna (Nicole
Kidman). All in all, life is good for the Murphys.
It’s no surprise then that with his clout and
status, Steven is happy to mentor and befriend
Martin (Barry Keoghan)--a teenager being raised
by a single mother (Alicia Silverstone) who has
shown interest in becoming a doctor. Martin’s
oddness comes across through awkward social
skills, but his intentions seem pure. Martin
soon begins to infiltrate Dr. Murphy’s life-
-after showing up at his work unannounced,
displaying interest in his daughter, and a string
of questionable acts, Steven begins to have
reservations about his relationship with Martin.
Only by that point, it’s too late.
Lanthimos has an artful way of examining
complicated relationships in his films, and The
Killing of a Sacred Deer pulls no punches
when it comes to unnerving visuals. He
subtly pushes the boundaries of reality until
you realize the absurdity of the situation in
which we find the characters. Adding to the
eerie surrealism are sweeping one-takes and
an observational style of filmmaking that his
longtime collaborator, cinematographer Thimios
Bakatakis, has perfected.
Colin Farrell makes an exciting return to the
big screen in Sacred Deer as Dr. Murphy. His
levelheadedness as the protagonist living the
picturesque American Dream does a complete
180 at the end of the film, and that transformation
is mesmerizing. Acting opposite Farrell is Barry
Keoghan, whose slow-boil performance as the
brooding Martin is one of the most unsettling
and villainous performances of the year. In true
Lanthamos fashion, however, mystery provides
a thick veil and situations are downplayed on
the surface—resulting in a pulsating fear at
the film’s climax.
Winner of the Best Screenplay Award at
this year’s Cannes Film Festival, The Killing
of a Sacred Deer is another twisted journey
through the mind of modern-day visionary
Yorgos Lanthimos. It is fantastical and darkly
absurd--an uncomfortably hilarious and thoughtful
look at relationships and the sacrifice one
makes under impossible circumstances. While
it may be difficult to overshadow the success
of The Lobster, Sacred Deer will have no
trouble solidifying itself as a successful entry
in Lanthimos’ expanding canon.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer is rated R for
disturbing violent and sexual content, some
graphic nudity and language. 116 minutes.
