News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
named Norb Huber
Good Neighbors Day –
This Saturday!
It’s finally here. I really hope you
can make it over to Jim Thorpe Park
this Saturday. A lot of hard work has
gone into setting up the new Hawthorne
Museum. The grand opening and
ribbon cutting ceremony will be part of Good
Neighbors Day this year. Five, great live
bands will be performing on stage. The In-
N-Out Burger truck will be there. The first
annual John Baker Memorial Car Show will
be held out on the park’s large grounds. An
art walk and many vendors will be setting up
their booths. Plan to make a good day out of
it. There will be plenty to take in. You are
encouraged to park on the street or better yet,
walk, or ride a bike over to the site. Parking
will be limited. This is our seventh year for
GND. It’s been a great day each year for
Hawthorne. We celebrate our history, we
celebrate our diversity, and we celebrate our
good neighbors. It will be great to have the
good people of Hawthorne come together and
share in the festivities. I’ll be there. If you
read my column, please introduce yourself to
me. I get lonely writing this every week for my
five relatives that open up there emails some
weeks. I really think I have a lot of “closet
readers”. You know I’m talking about you
folks who don’t want to admit that you read
this stuff. That’s okay, writing off the wall
stuff is therapy for me. I feel worthwhile, I
feel that I have contributed something to the
cause. I feel like I’ve done my duty regardless
of how many of you there are out there. The
way I look at it, is IF I reach one soul and
that one person has a cold one to relax and
enjoy life, I can go to sleep knowing that I
have “made a difference”. Have a cold one
for me, I’ll sleep better.
Cuban Festival
Get ready for some more fun. The annual
Cuban Festival is returning and will be held
on Sunday, October 1 starting at 12 noon at
the Sociedad Jose Marti. The festival was
not held last year but for many years has
been a real treat to attend. Delicious Cuban
foot, sandwiches, fritters tamales, and Cuban
coffee. Live music provided by
the Charanga Cubana Band and
DJ Audio Genics. Admission is
$10 for adults and free for children
12 years old and under. Verena
Cubana is the name of the event
but it’s really spelled FUN. So,
mark your calendars and plan to
get over to Prairie Avenue early
to get a parking spot.
36 Different Cans
As I was looking for ice cream, I passed by
the “cold ones section” of WalMart Market
the other day and spotted a big display for
Budweisers. These were not just your regular
Buds, these were giant cases of 36 cans. Each
can had a different NFL team logo on it. So,
I guess if your team is losing you can find
the winning team and celebrate with that cold
one. My 49ers have not done well for the past
several years, so I might need to find another
team to celebrate with. Since I only have one
cold one each weekend, this giant case will
last me through the regular season and well
into the playoffs.
Florida, Texas,
Mexico, Who’s Next?
Why does God allow all of these natural
disasters to occur? Hurricanes and earthquakes
kill loved ones and good people lose all of their
earthly possessions. Could it be that God wants
us to depend on Him instead of putting our trust
in our wealth? We either put our whole trust
in what we accumulate or accomplish here on
earth or we trust in God who provides us with
all we need. We can’t serve two masters. We
read in Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two
masters. Either you will hate the one and love
the other, or you will be devoted to the one
and despise the other. You cannot serve both
God and money.
When bad comes into our lives, God is
working through those trials to bring us closer
to him. All of our money, our houses, our cars
and everything else in our lives can disappear
in a moment, but God’s love for us can never
be taken away. Live today without worrying
so much about how much money you need to
make to buy that next big car or house or big
screen. Trust in the Lord with all of your heart
and God will provide you with what you need
to really live. I look forward to seeing you
on Saturday. •
