Hawthorne Happenings News for the City of Good Neighbors from an Old Guy named Norb Huber WHAT’S HAPPENING? What’s happening in Hawthorne? Here are some really random Hawthorne happenings. My brain is locked and I really can’t think of anything newsworthy to write about. The sidewalk repairs and replacements in the Ramona Tract have been completed recently. A new pedestrian bridge over Crenshaw Blvd. for SpaceX employees to use to get safely from their parking structure to their job site was put up over this past weekend. A “hole in the wall” eatery has become a very popular place for Mexican food. Mi Zacatecas Mexican restaurant on Inglewood Avenue on some nights has a line out the door. The Boring Company is asking permission to dig a tunnel under 120th Street from Crenshaw to Hawthorne Blvd. and maybe further. Hawthorne would be the first city in the nation to try going underground to beat traffic. Maybe there will be extra parking spots underground also since there is a shortage of spots on our streets. The Dodgers continue to win and no one can watch them on television since no one has Spectrum cable. Two more futsal soccer courts are being constructed at Jim Thorpe Park thanks to the LA Galaxy Foundation and the Hawthorne Police Department. The temps might not be so bad, but we are not used to the high humidity readings lately. July 21st was the 48th anniversary of man first walking on the moon. Where were you? This Sunday is National Hot Fudge Sundae Day. Now that is something to celebrate! Forget the diet. Forget your waistline. Indulge and enjoy. For me, ice cream ranks right up there with beer, hot dogs and donuts. Have some random fun and food while you enjoy some summer happenings in Hawthorne. HISTORICAL SOCIETY UPDATE Thanks to all of you who came out to help the HHS move their belongings into the new Hawthorne Museum. The day went well and all of the furniture and memorabilia is inside the building. Now the fun begins. Hundreds of photos and articles have to be sorted out to determine how or whether we will put them out on display. As that work progresses, we will also get ready for September 16th. That is the Saturday for Good Neighbors Day, the first annual John Baker Memorial Car Show, and the grand opening of the Museum at the Jim Thorpe Park site. Call Danny at 310-643-6139 if you would like to get involved. The next open meeting of the Hawthorne Historical Society will be held on Monday, August 7th at 6:30 p.m. at the museum located at 14100 S. Prairie Avenue. We need your help. RESOLVE TO RISE There will be a “Right Touch” workshop this Saturday, July 29th at 10 a.m. at the Fun Ship Learning Preschool sponsored by Resolve to Rise. The workshop is meant for children and their parents to learn how to prevent sexual abuse. Please RSVP by calling 310-465-8652 or go to eventbrite.com and search: the Right Touch. MOVING VACATION I’ll be up in Northern California this weekend helping my daughter and family move all of their earthly possessions into a home they purchased. The forecast calls for 102 degree heat all weekend. Those cold ones will be looking pretty good after lifting boxes and getting a tad bit sweaty climbing stairs. Yes, they do have a swimming pool. I hope it’s GVMMPGXBUFSr (If you do enjoy my weekly column, please shoot me an email. I love to hear from my readers. – norbhuber@gmail.com)
