that resulted from these barbaric Christmas
practices. Thus the seeds of a holiday Christmas
Bird Count were sown. Wherein bird
enthusiasts would perform a helpful annual
bird census rather than just attempting to fill
our flying friends with birdshot. And a new
holiday tradition took indelible root.
And the tradition continues on strong today.
Beginning from December 14th to January
5th, tens of thousands of eager volunteers
across the western hemisphere fix their gaze
toward the skies and collectively contribute
to our understanding of bird conservation.
The Audubon and other scientific organizations
corral the data collected and maintain
the continuity of this long-standing wildlife
census to assess the long-term health of local
bird populations, guide conservation initiatives,
and help protect habitats by anticipating longterm
trends and patterns. The commitment of
volunteers is steadfast. Through rain, sleet,
or snow. The dedicated efforts of able-eyed
volunteers are critical to ensure that geese,
french hens, and turtle doves remain plentiful
for a multitude of Christmases to come.
The data collected is instrumental for a
plethora of purposes. The vast amounts of
information tallied over the last century
provides insights to ornithologist researchers,
conservation biologists, and intrepid wildlife
agencies by supplying a more comprehensive
picture of the continent’s bird population and
migratory habits over time and space yielding
a long-term perspective to identify possible
environmental threats and inform conservation
strategies. The data collected during the
Christmas Bird Count has historically been
included in peer-reviewed publications and
government reports. So your generous participation
in this annual census is indubitably
quantifiable and unquestionably consequential.
So bundle up and tune those ears and eyes
to birdsong and peripheral fluttering respectively.
All birders of all experience levels are
welcome to participate. Just be sure not to
count the plump holiday bird on the serving
platter come Christmas Eve. •
