Thank you!
Joanne Kaneda: I am honored to serve
as your WUSD School Board member. You
elected me to protect and advance the quality
of our WUSD education experience and I am
committed to these responsibilities.
I grew up in a bilingual, ethnic household
with strong family bonds. I was raised to be
passionate about family, education, diversity,
and community. My WUSD volunteer commitments
began as a room mom at Anza, parent
representative on the WUSD budget committee,
and grew to the heartfelt pledge to serve as a
WUSD School Board Member.
My foundation values are commitment to
family and community service, and these same
values are rooted in WUSD’s identity. As your
WUSD Board Member, I deliver the best education
for kids and community. Our WUSD
standard of excellence in education, safety and diversity
is widely known and respected. Check my

Hawthorne Hotspot from page 2
is this Covid-19 is a bad thing, but it became
a good way for people to reflect. It’s about
understanding that life is not just about what we
had before; easy, and given to us. We lost some
freedom, we’re constantly worried about food,
and we can’t go to places anymore. Now that
things are somewhat getting better, let’s make
a change in the world to make it a better place.
People need to make a change in themselves
so our communities can be better. It’s not just
expecting the city and the government to make
it better for us. We should make that difference
ourselves to pass it on to other people, you
know? If you learn something good and pass
it on, there’s going to be a higher percentage
of good in this world and vice versa if you do
something bad. Therefore, it’s better to pass
on the good because the bad is already there.

My Thoughts
I will admit, this is the first interview that
I have done in person. I’m used to presenting
interviews via text, but this experience was
different. I’m usually a shy and introverted
person, but Sandra and Jose made it comfortable
and welcoming for me. They seem like
regular business owners from the outside, but
after getting to know their actual goals and their
intentions, they are by far one of the most
caring individuals I met. I will admit that listening
to Jose’s last words of advice made me
consider life a lot deeper. My favorite quote by
him “pass on the good because there’s already
bad” made me realize that he’s not wrong.
There is so much chaos going on around
this world and sometimes we don’t try to
step back and see it. We are too busy to see
the surroundings and we often pretend that
nothing is wrong. Or, we simply do not pay
attention enough. Because of his quote, I want
to start growing again. I became too invested
in myself and my top priorities that I haven’t
paused and taken a break. At a point in time,
I was obsessed with affirmations and growth.
I loved learning about new perspectives and
how weirdly the universe works. Hopefully,
if I see my schedule clears up a bit, I will
start reading about affirmations again. •
