Hawthorne Police Department’s
Police Cadet Program Resumes
Meet Cadet Cynthia Sandoval as the Hawthorne Police Department re-opens the police cadet program. Prior to Cynthia’s new assignment, she volunteered for three years as a police explorer, while successfully paving her way through high school. She’s now in her second
year of college and majoring in psychology while working with different bureaus around the station. Photo courtesy Hawthorne Police Department.

Disputes a Fact
I am writing to you to dispute a fact in
your article about Mayor Vargas published
in Hawthorne Herald, Vol. 2 No. 34, dated
August 20, 2020. Space X opened its door in
Hawthorne 2007, thanks to the former Mayor
Larry Guidi, not Mayor Vargas.

Predictable
or Direct?
One of my many critics commented
after reading last week’s
ramble that this weekly undertaking
has become oh so predictable.
These are his exact words: “The HH
columns are so predictable and have become
bland. 1. Make stupid comments about situations
in the news. 2. Admonish all to drink
beer. 3. Throw in a little Jesus and Scripture.
That’s it every week. Time to hang it up.”
Well, that’s pretty accurate; I have to agree
that this loyal critic hit the preverbal old, rusty,
bent nail on the head. So, maybe instead of
beating around the burning bushes and tip
toeing through the muddy waters of life, as
we know it, just maybe I’ll be direct in my
approach to things that matter. Will I get fired
if I say that ALL lives matter? Will I lose a
majority of my loyal readers if I say that I’m
voting for Trump? Will I receive some nasty
emails if I say that kids should go back to
real school and teachers should be “essential
workers” and deal with “in person” teaching?
I may not be woke enough. I may be viewed
as a white privileged racist but I really do care
about all of my neighbors regardless of their
ethnic makeup, I do care about the unborn
babies who are murdered each year,
I do care that our communities
remain safe and law and order be
enforced. It hurts me to see young
people getting shot by police, but
why do we have to go around burning
buildings and rioting to protest
a police involved shooting? Does
more violence bring about justice?
Thanks to cell phone cameras
and social media, every incident
is immediately broadcast to America. I saw
this first hand several years ago when Max,
a German Shepherd dog, was shot when he
started attacking one of Hawthorne’s finest.
The worldwide outcry was amazing and was
just a warm up to the reaction to George Floyd
and other police shootings. This is serious
stuff. I can’t make fun of any of it. I can’t say
stupid things so we all can laugh it away. We
all have to deal with it all in our own way.
I share my views, if you agree or disagree,
so be it. I know some of you may not like
me any more. Of course, a lot of you never
liked me to begin with. Isn’t it still legal in
America to express one’s views without fear?
Of course, I put all of this into prospective
with my view of Christian citizenship. We
are all citizens of two kingdoms. One is a
spiritual kingdom and one is the kingdom of
this world. Christian citizenship will advance
the cause of movements that strengthen the
