Help Our Youth Beat the Odds
We celebrate these local teenagers who were met with challenges that led them into contact with the Hawthorne Police Department. They trusted our mentorship, participated in a restorative justice program and elected to join a 6 month, military based high school / live in
academy. Cadet Bermudez graduated as a senior in high school and will soon begin college with a scholarship behind him, towards diesel mechanics. Cadet Mejia graduated as a junior from the program and will enter his senior year in high school, striving for his diploma
in June of 2021. They were also honor roll students. Congratulations. You did it. Thank you to Hawthorne HS staff member (Adriana Cabrera) for helping mentor Class 25. Photo courtesy Hawthorne Police Department.

Our Generation is the Change
By Samantha Schmidt
Hi Hawthorne! My name is Samantha
Schmidt and I am an intern for the Hawthorne
City Clerk’s Office. The year 2020 brings
another round for elections for legislators,
governors, judges, and President. Believe it or
not, elections are coming to a near, meaning
there is under 90 days until the elections! The
biggest goal that Hawthorne is attempting to
accomplish is getting young people to vote.
Did you know that young voters account for
half of the eligible voting population? This
means the millennials are the most powerful
political force, implying that their vote can
be extremely influential in this country. Thus,
to the youth, I will tell you my top three
reasons why voting helps your community.
To those who have a “young” eligible voter
in your life, or you’re a “young” eligible
voter, I will tell you my top three reasons
why voting helps your community.
The Importance of Voting
To give you a bit of background, only
61.4% of eligible voters voted in the 2016
elections. There was an astounding 38.6%
of eligible people who did not vote! For the
upcoming elections, it is important that the
percentage of people who vote increases.
We can start with our own Hawthorne community
since we generally would like to see
better representation. Individuals who are
eligible to vote must register to vote in order
to accomplish this. As a way to encourage
those thinking about voting, below are three
reasons to consider.
The first reason your vote matters is that
voting can determine where your tax dollars
are spent. The majority of Americans pay
taxes, but do you know how that money
is distributed? Government officials, either
elected or department officials appointed by

Hotter than Hades
Hades is another name for hell
just in case some of you loyal
readers didn’t know what the heck
I was referring to. How hot is hell?
When those ol’ time preachers
would preach their “fire and brimstone”
sermons back in the day, they would
talk about hell being an “eternal lake of fire”.
If that wouldn’t scare the crapola out of you,
I don’t know what would. With this week’s
heat wave, some people may feel like we have
gone to hell and back. The thermometer read
112 degrees Fahrenheit in Sacramento this
past Sunday. Every day this week we have
been above the 105 mark. If you think that
is hot, try going over to Death Valley where
a reading of 130 degrees was recorded, one
of the hottest temps on record. Thank God
for air conditioning and a swimming pool.
Our AC unit blew a fuse one evening last
week which brought about some consternation
from my dear wife, until I made a
trip down to Lowes. Then the next day we
discovered that our garage refrigerator had
bit the dust. Wow! The stench from rotting
meat in a hot garage can be overpowering.
Luckily, we managed to fill our ice chest
with ice and keep my cold ones somewhat
cold. We really dodged a bullet on that one.
As long as we have a cold one, we can just
about survive anything. Power outages,
wildfires, lockdowns, online
education for millions of kids; all
of those minor “hiccups” can be
easily handled if we have a cold
one. One of my golfing friends commented
that he’s worried about the
November election. I said, “relax,
have a cold one, God’s got it all
under control”. No matter what
the outcome, many Americans are
considering buying a gun, stocking up on
ammo, and reloading their ice boxes with
cold ones to face the uncertain future. Who
knows what in the heck is going to come
our way next? If you are one of my 33 loyal
readers, you know that I have not changed
my message during this “virus thing” period.
I started telling everyone who stooped low
enough to read this rag that God loves them,
that they have been set free to live a joyful
life and that because of this, they can relax
and have a cold one. Ten straight years,
50 weekly attempts at stupidity, 500 times
I’ve told you all to have a cold one. That’s
just it, we need to be reminded of who we
are and who loves us on a daily basis. We
forget so easily. We start to worry. The
concerns of the world weigh us down. Our
anxiousness affects us mentally, emotionally,
and physically. That’s why we need to hear
those great spiritual promises of love, mercy,
grace, forgiveness, and salvation on a daily
basis. Every morning we should remind
