Hawthorne Fire Department
Train to Keep Our Community Safe
This was the first night the members of the Hawthorne Fire Department met together in person for a hands on drill since the start of the pandemic. Members used drills to go over master streams, hand lines and the use of the Gator vehicle. Photo credit TKNY.

Hawthorne Hotspot
Hello Hawthorne! My name is Samantha
Schmidt and I am a new intern for the Hawthorne
City Clerk’s Office. I just finished my
first year at Santa Monica College and I will
soon be applying to several universities, which
will include CSU Long Beach and UC Berkeley.
Just like many of you in the beginnings of
the Covid-19 outbreak, I was saddened by the
fact that I wasn’t able to continue engaging in
everyday activities, such as hanging out with
my friends, going to my school’s campus, or
even walking my dog around the neighborhood.
However, I have some good news!
Businesses began reopening little by little in
and around our Hawthorne neighborhoods.
Thus, here are a few businesses that I believe
you should visit, while, of course, continuing
the practice of social distancing and wearing
a mask at all times.
Local Businesses
There is nothing better than supporting your
local businesses. Many of them are familyowned,
independently owned and just getting
started, or well known in the community and
have been engaging and supporting our Hawthorne
community for some time. In order to
bring awareness to these businesses, I want to
give you a few ideas of places you can go to
and help support during these times. If you’re
interested in getting a quick bite to eat, head
over to Cafe Cube and Cakes located at 12215
Hawthorne Blvd and enjoy a nice warm coffee
with their plantain chips! Or, since the warm
summer weather is approaching, go to Foster’s
Freeze just north of 120th and Hawthorne
Blvd for a cold soft serve ice cream! To all of
you car lovers, you can visit the $1 Car Wash
between 136th and 137th on Inglewood Ave.
Not only is this car wash inexpensive but it’s
open 24/7! Some car auto shops to consider
going to are Hawthorne Auto Square (a used
car dealer shop if any of you are looking to
invest in buying a car), Zack’s Smog (for a
smog inspection), or check out Prairie Auto
Security & Sound if you want to purchase a
new stereo! If you would like to see a list of
over 200 open businesses in Hawthorne that
we’ve created as interns to help guide you,
you can find this list on our NextDoor, Twitter,
or Instagram! You can access these social
media sites through any smartphone, tablet, or
computer/laptop. All you have to do is sign up
at NextDoor.com and search the title ‘Please
Support Your Local Businesses.’ You may also
download the Instagram app via your smartphone’s
Play Store/Apple Store, then you can
create a username of your choice and search ‘@

our posts (you would be looking for a posted
picture of a store door with an open sign). If
you would like, you may also find this post
