Zoom Family Gathering
Want to spend time with family without the
dangers of the pandemic spreading between
family members? Zoom is the perfect place for
this. If you haven’t yet heard of Zoom, this is
a downloadable program where you can have a
virtual meeting with other people from around
the world using your camera and microphone.
This is a good time to try something new in
regards to social gatherings and make it online.
All you would have to do is go to Zoom.com
on your computer, or download the Zoom application
from the Apple store or Google Play
store, and follow the instructions on setting up
your account and program. This past Mother’s
Day, I created a Mother’s Day virtual gathering
with several of my family members. There were
a total of 10 of us connected and everyone
had a great time sharing personal stories and
laughter together. I highly recommend this to
be your next family arrangement or to simply
stay connected together.
Play an online game
Do you have a drive to play against others in
a little good old fashion competition? Try out
some online games where you can play against
real people in virtual matches. To find a game
you are interested in, go to your Apple store or
Google Play store on your mobile device, search
for a game you are interested in (Words with
Friends, UNO!, or several online card/board
games), read over the game’s description to
check if it’s an online game, and download it
to your phone! Once downloaded, give it a try.
If you end up not being interested in the initial
game you’ve downloaded, you can always uninstall
it and try something else! Online games
is a great way to pass the time while having fun
playing against other people from around the
world. It’s a great way to keep you occupied
as well as keep you mentally sharp as you look
for ways to outsmart your opponent and win.
Josh’s thoughts
Hello Hawthorne! My name is Josh and I
am one of several interns working for the City
Clerk’s office of Hawthorne. I am twenty-four
years old and I am going to be transferring to
the University of California Santa Cruz this
coming fall! I’ve written once before when
Brissa (our previous writer) was just starting,
and now that she is moving towards the next
stages of her life we are already missing her
kind personality and creative thinking that
she shared with us at the office (or at least
our virtual office these days). With that said,
I just wanted to remind everyone that staying
positive is the single most important thing we
can do during these times (in addition to keeping
good nutrition). Positive thinking will keep
a healthy mind that will help to make good
health decisions for ourselves and our families.
I’ve seen a lot of positive things come out of
communities all around us. For instance, I saw
on the news there was (or possibly still is) an
urban safari created in a SoCal community
where people have large inflatable animals on
their front lawns for display and families can
drive around searching for these animals using
a map they are able to print from an online
website. What an idea! Even in our own Hawthorne
community, several homeowners agreed
to put up a stuffed animal bear in their front
window last month for parents to go around
the neighborhood with their children and do
some ‘bear spotting’ or ‘bear hunting.’ Simple
and fun for the family! What an amazing job
we are doing, and we should all keep up the
good work on supporting one another since it
still looks like we’ll be in this for a while. As
always, stay safe out there. •

What I Learned in
Kindergarten Might
NOT Have Been All
I Needed To Know
I was a late bloomer. I didn’t talk
until I was four years of age and
had to stay after dismissal in kindergarten
to work with my teacher on
speaking. Ever since then, I have never been
one to keep my mouth shut as demonstrated
by being a long winded politician during my
nine year stint as City Clerk. Speaking was not
the only thing I was taught during my first year
in public education. Like most all of us, I was
told to keep my hands and feet to myself, raise
my hand if I wanted to ask a question or go to
the bathroom, wash my hands after going, be
nice and respectful to my peers and teacher,
clean up after myself, and study hard. If we
did all of these things, then we would surely
succeed. Yes, that all sounds like a winning
formula but as we all know, even if we followed
all of this wonderful instruction, things
don’t always turn out the way we envisioned
them to. Instilling the American
Work Ethic in a generation or two
did not guarantee a “live happily
ever after” life for everyone. From
our experience, we know that we
learn from our failures, grow when
we are faced with challenges, and
gain confidence when we overcome
our doubts and anxiety. Life has not
been what we envisioned the past
two months. Just nine weeks ago, it
seemed like we were all doing the
right things. America was employed. People
were enjoying the fruits of their labor. Just
like those kindergartners learning their life
lessons on Zoom today, we never could have
envisioned what life would throw at us. A big
lesson that we did not learn when we were five
years of age is that we are not in control of
our lives. Life happens, and we have to deal
with it. The center of the universe is not me,
myself and I. Does all of this stuff happen by
chance? Is there a rhyme or reason to life’s
melody? Are we all just a haphazard of nature?
My answer to all three questions is no. There
is an Almighty Being, God. He is in control.
He provides what we need, not necessarily
