Big Number 65
I turn 65 years young this Friday,
May 8th. Besides it being my
birthday, it is the 75th anniversary
of VE Day. VE stands for Victory
in Europe for most of us who
can’t remember our high school
history course facts. On May 8,
1945 Germany formally surrendered to the
Allied forces signaling the end of WWII in
Europe. Millions of people celebrated this
victory, especially in Great Britain and the US
of A. The celebration was somewhat muted
by the fact that we were still fighting in the
Pacific Theater. I guess my patriotism shows.
I love recalling our American history, for
better or worse. Things have changed since
those days. A man named Walt was laughed
at for building an amusement park out in the
orange groves of Anaheim in 1955 the same
year I was born. Critics didn’t think enough
people would choose to attend a park full of
rides and attractions. Now, most of America
is wondering when or if they will be able to
ever go back to enjoy the excitement and fight
the crowds at the Happiest Place on Earth.
Most of us want to escape and venture into
a fantasy world. No matter how high Disney
raises the ticket prices to, we all want to take
our mind off the present and go back in time
to a simpler time, a time when we didn’t have
to worry about staying 72 inches apart from
each other. Even the past wars that we have
fought in were simpler to understand than this
one we are fighting now. Back then there was
an enemy. We knew whom we were fighting.
We all pulled together to support our troops. We
built ships, tanks and aircraft, some of which
were built right in Hawthorne, CA. There was
unity in fighting a common foe. This virus
thing we are fighting now kind of
snuck up on us. We have been given
directions on how to fight, but are
we winning? This enemy is elusive.
If we knew where it was, we could
isolate it, surround it, suffocate it,
and destroy it. We long for those
simpler times. We want to go back
to relaxing and enjoying life be it
in a crowd, taking an airplane trip,
or simply gathering with friends
and family to eat a meal and have
some fun together. Life continues, no matter
what. God has blessed me with a healthy 65
years. He has given me a dear wife, three
children, two son-in-laws, three grandchildren,
a whole lot of friends, 25 loyal readers, and
just a few critical, extended family members.
Every week my critics tell me to stop my
blabbering. Every week I sit and type away
believing that there are some people out there
who enjoy reading this junk. Any way, to all
of you who were born, happy birthday, have
a cold one, and enjoy life.
Mothers Day
I was always my mom’s favorite. I was born
on Mothers Day. Every mom deserves our
love. She is the one who carried us around
for nine months. We wouldn’t be here without
her. Pregnancy is a special time. My youngest
daughter, Katie, is expecting this July 16th. Papa
will be happy to see his third grandchild out in
the world soon. A mother and child relationship
is simply amazing. The love shown, the
innocence of the child, the dependency of the
little one to be fed and taken care of. It has to
be the greatest example of love there is here on
earth. We can’t thank our mothers enough for
all that they have given to us. Happy Mother’s
Day to every mother out there.
– Thanks for reading this week’s ramble.
