Huber’s Hiccups
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
named Norb Huber
Waiting
I hate waiting in line. Am I
impatient? Sure. I always have
felt like it’s a big waste of my
time whenever I’ve have had to
wait to check out at the grocery
store, deposit a check at the bank,
stand in line to purchase a ticket
at a baseball game, or worse yet, waiting to
get into the men’s room at Dodger Stadium.
None of us really look forward to hurry up
and wait. I haven’t even mentioned the
congested 405 freeway “stop and wait”
syndrome. Maybe that’s why this period has
seemed so long. All of us have been in a
holding pattern. Air traffic control has not
given us permission to land yet. Who really
knows how long we will have to circle the
landing area? Just like my roller coaster
phobia, I don’t do well when turbulence
starts bouncing our jumbo jet around when
we are passing through some air pockets. We
keep waiting to get the “all’s clear” signal
from our captain. Some of us are getting a
little antsy to get off of our plane ride and
hit the ground running. But, our leaders
say that’s not going to happen. It’s going
to be slow, really slow, much like when we
disembark from our plane’s economy section.
As soon as the flight attendant tells everyone
that it is safe to unbuckle, every passenger
stands up to get their luggage out of the
overhead compartment and then waits for
twenty minutes for people ahead
of them to leave. Our “reopening”
is going to be methodical and our
adjustment to the “new norm”
may take some time getting used
to. Even in our troubles and our
bumpy ride we can take heart. In
his letter to the church in Rome,
Paul writes, “We also have joy with
our troubles, because we know that
these troubles produce patience.
And patience produces character,
and character produces hope. And this hope
will never disappoint us, because God has
poured out his love to fill our hearts.” I don’t
know about you, but I’m tired of building
character. I’m getting impatient. But, we
all could use some hope. Every day we
need to be reminded of who is pouring his
love out for us and all the blessings He is
bestows upon us. One of these days we will
be able to grab our bags at baggage claim,
walk straight our of the terminal, and give
our loved ones a big hug celebrating our
arrival back to the wonderful world of cars,
smog and congestion. Won’t it be great to
be stuck on the 405 in traffic for an hour
getting home from LAX to Hawthorne?
Can’t Miss A Week
There is no way that I can write this
weekly, bloggidy blog without some words
of wisdom from a no-nothing, want-to-be
dummy. Here we go, in no apparent order:

“Remember That God Loves You and There

Free Delivery of Snacks to
Hawthorne Senior Citizens!
Social media platforms are an excellent
and efficient way to share the availability
of resources amidst times like this, but unfortunately
most senior citizens are not yet
connected to online social media platforms.
This is why Hawthorne City Hall’s employees
and interns, including myself, have been
working hard in making calls to registered
senior voters in order to inform them about
the free food resources being provided by the
city. One of the programs made available is
the Free Senior Snack Program. This program
provides either delivery to your home or a
grab n go option. Participants must call the
Recreation office at 310-349-1640 to register
and receive details on when delivery dates
will be. If you are a senior (or know of a
senior) that would like to participate, the
requirements are as follows: you must be of
age 60 or above and a resident of Hawthorne.
You may pick up snacks in person Monday-
Thursday from 11am to 1pm or you can get
your snacks delivered to your home Mondayyour
