The Weekly Newspaper of Hawthorne
The Hawthorne Police Department lost one very special soul. Officer Chiarello fought cancer hard for over two years, and during that time she managed to stay positive, never lost hope, and never ever felt sorry for herself. She was a tough cookie with a heart of gold.
She will be greatly missed. Photo Hawthorne Police Department.

What Can We Say?
I read posts on Facebook, I talk with people
on the phone, I see people in the neighborhood,
or at the store, and it’s interesting to
hear their “take” on things. The government
and health officials are telling us to do
things to “flatten the curve”, like “shelter in
place”. News stations give us the “worse
case scenarios” that put fear into everyone
who hears that “the worst is yet to come”.
The world’s economy has been halted, and
people are afraid to go anywhere out of fear.
The uncertainty of what lies ahead is what is
most unsettling. The measures that we have
been told to take, and the side effects that
those measures are having may have a much
more long term affect on our world than the
virus itself. So, that’s the bad news. But I’m
supposed to be the weekly barer of positive,
good news. I’m supposed to be Mr. “Relax,
have a Cold One, God Loves You”. I’m supposed
to be here to say something uplifting,
something funny, something biblical, that
gives us something to chew on. I hear of
reports from some MIT and Stanford medical
experts that say that the virus may not be as
aggressive as we thought. We keep hoping
and praying that we will wake up from this
“nightmare” one morning and hear some good
news, something to give us a little light at
the end of the tunnel. This living “a day at
a time” is not something we like to do. We
like to know what we will be doing tomorrow,
next week, next year. We like to have
control over our lives. We like to have the
ability to make choices and live our lives the
way we want them to be lived. If nothing
else, this “experience” has reminded us that
we cannot control everything. We are just
little ants running around on this
earthly ant pile. We are scurrying
about bumping into each other as
we go about finding our way. But,
now we are told to stay away from
each other. Ants don’t function well
without each other, we certainly
do not either. Just when a hug, a
handshake, or a long conversation
in person with a friend is needed,
we are told to keep our distance.
God has a reason for all things. He
is still right here in the midst of all of this. Is
He saying, “depend on me”, not your material
possessions? Is He saying, “fear not”, for you
keep on forgetting that I am with you? Is
He saying, “I am your help and strength”, no
matter what tragedy or worldwide catastrophe
comes your way? His ways are not our ways.
His thoughts are not our thoughts. When we
try to look at things from God’s view, we
see things in a very different light. Yes, God
gives us brains to make choices to protect
ourselves. God says we are to respect our
government for He has put them into place.
But, when we have done all that we can for
ourselves, our families and our neighbors, the
ultimate outcome is in God’s hands. So, worry
doesn’t help, fear only makes it worse. I say
trust on God Almighty and rely his promises.
There is no shortage of cold ones out there,
so I leave you with this, relax, have a cold
one, and know that God loves you in good
times and in bad times.
Shut Down Reading Challenge
Okay, you are stuck at home. There are not
too many choices on what we are to do. We
can sit and watch tv, sit and watch movies,
sit and look at our cell phone or ipad. We can
read on Facebook what all your FB friends are
saying. We can play games with your kids or
spouse. We can try to help your
kids do common core math when
we learned to do math the old
fashioned way. Why not read a
book? Usually, I’m so busy doing
“things” that I have little time to
read. I do more reading on vacation
than any other time. It looks
like we will all be on vacation the
next two or three weeks minimum.
It’s hard to decide on what book
or books we want to read. I challenge
you and myself to pull out a book that
everyone has but is one of the most unread
books we have on our shelves. God’s Word
is not just a good book, a guide as to how
we are to live, but when we open it up, the
Holy Spirit uses the words that we read to
lead us to salvation. Through the reading of
the Word, God comes to us and saves us. I
encourage you and me to turn off our electronic
gadgets and do something novel, like
reading the Bible. If you don’t know where to
start, try reading the Gospel of John. I leave
you with this comforting passage found in
Romans, chapter 8, verses 38-39: “For I am
convinced that neither death nor life, neither
angels nor demons, neither the present nor
the future, nor any powers, neither height nor
depth, nor anything else in all creation, will
be able to separate us from the love of God
that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Do not be
afraid my loyal readers, we are safe.
