Huber’s Hiccups
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
Enjoy the Moment
Just got back from Hawthorne. Me
and Linda, aka OL, “my old lady”,
drove the 2002 Toyota Tundra down
to SoCal in order to clean out the remainder
of her late mother’s stuff from her family’s
home on 134th Street. We are trying to
get it ready to sell in the near future. It’s
hard to sort through things, donating some
stuff to Goodwill, and keeping some things
just for sentimental reasons. We ended up
needing to rent a U-Haul trailer to transport
“stuff” back up here to Orangevale. During
our two day stay we visited with several of
our friends, some who claim to be loyal
readers. It’s always great to reconnect with
those we used to see almost every day when
we were living in Hawthorne. We shared
some stories, talked about people, and had
a few laughs. When it was time to say good
bye, I was thinking in the back of my mind
when would be the next time we would see
eachother again. Have you ever said good
bye to someone knowing full well that it
may be the last time you ever see them again
at least on this side of heaven? Distance
separates friends and family. We can only
be in one place. We treasure the memories
of good times that we shared. It’s good that
we remember the good and forget about those
bad or boring moments. I tell my daughter
and son-in-law to enjoy their kids while they
are still young because they grow up so fast.
We can’t turn back the clock. We only can
enjoy the memories and make the most of
the present. We value our friendships, we
treasure our families, everything else pales
in comparison to those whom we love. Live
each day with joy making happy memories
with those who are close to you. After that,
it’s time to relax and have a cold
one. I remember and celebrate my
19 loyal readers and the memories
we have shared.
Driving the Golden State
So, we left Hawthorne around 11:30
a.m. thinking that the morning rush
would be over and the traffic getting out of
SoCal wouldn’t be so bad. We cruised down
Rosecranes to the 405 North onramp. As usual,
we hit stop and go traffic around Howard
Hughes Parkway, cars were weaving in and
out of lanes though the Sepulveda Pass, we
wind our way through the SF Valley up to
Sylmar and out to Magic Mountain. We
stop at McDonalds for our one dollar drinks
at Lake Hughes Road by Castaic Lake. We
stay in the middle lane all the way up the
Grapevine. I finally relax when we get down
to level ground going out in the Central Valley.
Then I set the cruise control to 67 mph
and steer it straight for 300 miles. Cars and
trucks are speeding right past us going 80 or
90 mph. The almond trees along Interstate
5 were beautiful with their colorful buds in
full bloom. After a stop for gas and to eat
dinner we are safely back home in NorCal.
Not too bad of a drive, just a lot of trucks and
traffic along the way. I’m always thankful
for safe travel. It’s nice to be back home.
Loyal Readers
One of my loyal readers up in Colorado
claims to be loyal reader #19, so I will go
with that. We might have some fussy math
going on here. I see people and they tell
me they enjoy reading my column. I’m
thinking, are they just saying that to make
me feel good? I ask them if they enjoy reading
about cold ones and God and they just
say sure. I have a feeling that I have some
“fake readers” out there, they claim to read
