LAX from front page
use. The biofuel is a 70-30 mixture, with the
higher amount being ordinary jet fuel and the
remainder the organic material, according
to United.
United has taken the lead on the issue of
greenhouse gas emissions from jetliners by
voluntarily switching to biofuels on a limited
number of daily flights, all originating from
LAX. The federal government eventually
will force the U.S. airline industry to curb
jet-engine emissions, which are believed to
be a contributor to climate change.
Federal regulations on carriers are believed
to be years away, according to aviation
journals that reported United’s fuel decision.
However, LAX is nudging the airlines to
switch to more environmentally-friendly
ground transportation and become partners in
the airport’s air-quality goals. Using electricity
rather than fuel to power parked aircraft at
the gates is another step taken to make a
seamless transition at the airport without
affecting safety or passenger comfort.
Even the massive construction projects
are on notice to use heavy equipment and
technology that produces fewer emissions.
Diesel trucks built in 2010 or after haul
construction materials and debris are used
at the construction sites, and fuel-efficient
diesel equipment is required.
The airport’s Employee Rideshare program
is credited with saving 300,000 gallons of
fuel annually since 2015. Nearly one-fourth
of LAX employees carpool to work.
One challenge facing the airports and airlines
is that air travel is increasing, putting more
planes in the air over the next decade. Even
with fuel-efficient jet engines, total aircraft
emissions could creep higher as new carriers
enter the U.S. and international markets.
By 2020, international aviation emissions
could be 70 percent higher than in 2005,
even if fuel efficiency improves by 2 percent
a year, according to estimates cited in a New
York Times article.
Offsetting those predictions, the FAA has
approved jet biofuel for use by domestic
airlines. The alternative fuel for United
passenger planes meets the same performance
standard as traditional jet fuel, the FAA said.
Known as AltAir biofuel, it is chemically
similar except for one ingredient: instead
of crude oil, it is derived from animal feed,
non-edible natural oils and other sources that
are readily available.
The environment benefit of AltAir’s jet
fuel, according to the company, is a 60
percent reduction in carbon dioxide released
in the atmosphere. That reduction includes
the emission totals from refining, delivering,
fueling and burning the fuel in United jets,
according to United. •
