Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
Wildfire Relief
And you thought earthquakes were
scary? The wildfires that hit all over
California last week were horrific. The
videos of those fortunate folk who made it
out alive are chilling. My brother- in-law,
Rev. Donald Jordan, former resident of Hawthorne,
is now pastor at Redeemer Lutheran
Church in Chico, CA. Chico has become the
center point for help and assistance given to
the 25,000 displaced residents of Paradise,
CA which was totally wiped off the map
last Thursday. If you would like to give
to families who lost everything in the fires
then there is an easy way to do so and you
will know for sure that your money will do
some good without any administration or
overhead costs. Pastor Jordan’s church elders
are screening families and confirming that
these folks lost their homes and all of their
earthly possessions. They are working with
over 30 families from Paradise who were
connected to the Lutheran church in Paradise
that burned down totally along with over
6,000 other structures. The monies given will
help these families get back on their feet.
Some had no clothes other than what they
were waring. Most had to leave everything
behind. If you would like to help financially,
go to the church’s website at: redeemerchio.
org and you will find a wildfire fund set up.
You can either donate using PayPal or send
in a check.
100% of all donations will be given directly
to these families. I will be traveling up to
Chico this Saturday to help put on a pancake
breakfast/fundraiser/community support event
at Redeemer Lutheran. The smoke will still
be heavy. The smoke this past week has
been hazardous. We also pray for the So-
Cal wildfires. The loss of lives and property
this past week has been again a reminder of
how precious life is. All of that “stuff” we
accumulate and work so hard to obtain can
be taken away in a moments notice. Our
loved ones and ourselves can be here today
but there are no guarantees that we will see
tomorrow. Even in times like these, there is
so much to be thankful for. Our prayers goes
out to all of those who have suffered a loss.
Cost Plus Moving
to Hawthorne
Rumor has it that the Cost Plus store located
in El Segundo will be moving to the
shopping center at Rosecrans and Isis
sometime in early 2019.
Winter Wonderland
Make plans to attend one of the
most fun events in Hawthorne all
year. The Parks and Recreation and
Community Services Department of
the City of Hawthorne started something
really good last year at Christmas time. The
Winter Wonderland had snow, games, gifts,
food, fun and a real Santa and Ms. Claus. The
turnout for the event was more than expected.
This year it most likely will be even bigger.
The Winter carnival will be held over at the
Memorial Center on December 19th. Mark
your calendars now for this super event.
Kiwanis Club
Seniors Luncheon
The Kiwanis Club of Hawthorne will host
their annual Seniors luncheon for all of us
older folks on December 7th, Pearl Harbor
Day. My oldest daughter’s birthday is on
December 6th so I always can remember
the next day is the “Day that will live in
Euphony”. Just this past week we remembered
the end of WWI with the 100th Anniversary
observation. The eleventh month, the eleventh
day and the eleventh hour. American history
is fascinating. We thank all of our vets once
again for their service to this great country.
National Day of Thanksgiving
The American tradition of Thanksgiving
began with a three-day feast that took place
in 1621 to celebrate a bountiful harvest. It
became cemented as an annual celebration
in 1863, when President Lincoln declared
a “day of Thanksgiving” in the midst of
the Civil War. So, is it a religious holiday
or not? I guess it depends on whether you
know who you are thanking. If you are not
thanking God for the many blessings that we
receive in this most affluent country, then
who are you thanking? Mother Earth? Are
we thanking the farmers who grew the crops
and raised the turkeys we eat? If we recognize
that all of life and the world we live in
is a gift from God then we truly have a day
of Thanksgiving. Our thanks should include
“everything”, even all of those cold ones that
we consume throughout the year. It’s hard for
me to imagine life without a cold one and
life not knowing that God loves me. This
Thanksgiving relax, celebrate, eat up, drink
up and thank the one true God for life and
everything else that makes our lives so great.
