News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy

Elections
I missed all the excitement that
comes with City election day. From
the polling places to the returning
of the ballots to City Hall, to the waiting
anxiously for the results to be posted on
a website or for Channel 22 HCTV to
show them for everyone who has Time
Warner to see. We have a new City Clerk.
I am officially the “former” City Clerk
now. It seems to me that most citizens
really don’t take too much interest in
politics until a few days before the election.
They get tired of hearing about all
the fighting and especially all the campaign
ads and robo calls that are placed on their
home phones. Well, it’s over for another
two years, and 2020 looks like it’s going to
be a real bruiser of a battle with us voting
for President again and also for Hawthorne
City Mayor. So, fresh off the computer
screen here are the winners from last night:
For City Council: Olivia Valentine and Alex
Monteiro, For City Clerk: Dr. Paul Jimenez,
For City Treasurer: L. David Patterson. Also,
Nilo Michelin won a seat on the El Camino
School Board, so he will be vacating his
seat as a Hawthorne City Council member.
This will force the city council to appoint
a replacement for him. Two years ago the
appointment process got quite divisive when
each of the council members had their favorite
person to be appointed. Congrats to all of
the winners. Serve well.
Veterans Celebrations
November is here and the holiday early
in the month is Veterans Day. The
Hawthorne Veterans Commission will be
hosting their 4th Annual Veterans Day
Celebration on Saturday, November 10th at
7 p.m. at the Hawthorne Memorial Center.
This year they will be recognizing all of
the veterans who are employed by the
City of Hawthorne and all the veterans who
serve us in the Hawthorne Police Department.
Each year this event has been a very popular
and fun event. Music and refreshments will
be part of the night’s agenda. We really do
owe our veterans a lot of recognition for
serving us. This event is a great way to show
our appreciation.
Veterans Day
Celebration
The Hawthorne VFW Post 2075
will be honoring our veterans,
families, active duty military and
District 4 auxiliaries by hosting a
Family Freedom Festival on Sunday
November 11th from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. at the post located at 4563 W. 131st
Street in Hawthorne. The event will include
Fun-Food-Raffles, Silent Auction, Activities
for Kids. Long-time civic volunteer and VFW
member, Carol Steinhauer sent me an email
asking me to please let everyone know that
this event is open to the public and will be
a great way to celebrate Veterans Day on
the 11th.
Out of Battery – No Life
We have become so dependent upon our
cell phones that if, God forbid, we lose
our phone or run out of battery charge, we
feel helpless, disconnected, and/or pretty
lonely. Our personal cells phones have
become part of us. I go to a football game
now and just show the ticket bar code on
the phone to get in. I board a plane now and
just scan my ticket on my phone. I place
and order on Amazon and with one click
of the button, the item that I wish to
purchase is on its way to my door step.
I can almost run my entire ecommerce
company using my iphone. It used to be
the young people were on their phones
24/7, now it’s all of us. Young and old,
rich or poor. Kindergarten students bring
phones to school to call their moms at lunch
time. African ranchers use phones to get
the weather to plant their crops at the right
time. Now, it’s not whether or not you
can hear me, but whether there is a wifi
hotspot close enough to me. Internet
coverage has pretty much covered the globe.
It’s nice not to be connected. When I attend
church and turn my cell phone off, it actually
is nice to not have to be distracted by
what is going on in my pocket. Technology
is great. It has given us greater opportunity
to stay together. But, some times it’s just
great to breath and just enjoy the moment
without this thing connected to our hands. I
would rather have my hand wrapped around
a cold one. Stay connected, but remember
to live and breath and smell the flowers
along the way.
