Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
Officially Retired
Today is the first day of school in
Long Beach. This is the first day in
41 years that I will not be trying to
pronounce new student’s names and introducing
myself to about 100 anxious teenagers
who promise to do good this semester and
not cause me any problems and show me the
proper respect I expect. Now, retirement will
feel like retirement. Now, we will see how I
can survive not rushing to get my classroom
before the bell rings four times a day. I have
been tied to a schedule for most of my life.
I knew where I would be and what I was
going to be doing everyday. Now, I’m free
to choose what I want to do and when I do
it. I love working and getting things done,
so even though I don’t have to, most of time
I will be working. The big difference is I
don’t have to. Does any of this make any
sense? I want to, but don’t have to, so I will,
but only when I want to. Okay, don’t over
think this retirement stuff, just enjoy it and
have a cold one when ever I want, because
I can. You understand?
Middle America –
Home of the Cold Ones
As part of my PHL, Post Hawthorne
Life, I am able to travel a little more when
I want. My son purchased a nice, 92 year
old home in Urbana, Illinois recently and
is literally “gutting” the interior and renovating
bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms and
every other room in the place. Last week I
flew back to help him out. I’m cheap labor
and I do most of the grunt work. My son
is the brain thrust that figures every thing
out. The University of Illinois is located in
Champaign-Urbana, so naturally with a lot
of college students, there are a lot of cold
ones consumed. They even have a tap room
establishment where you swipe your credit
card on the machine and you can dispense
your own cold ones and not have to wait to
be served one. It seems as if middle America
has been the birthplace of American
beer. Milwaukee, St. Louis are both
known for their beer. Miller and Bud
are household names that are offered
on almost every corner in the old
town sections. Yes, us “left coast”
people have a lot in common with
our Midwestern friends. It just seems
like they are a little more content, most likely
because of the number of cold ones they
consume. I kind of liked it. With the high
humidity, a person has to drink something,
it might as well be a cold one.
Hawthorne Street
Every town in America seems to have a
Hawthorne Street, Boulevard, Lane or Way.
I ran into another one in Urbana this past
week. My brother-in-law lives on Hawthorne
Street in Chico, CA. Of course there are
also some that are spelled without the “e” at
the end. Hawthorn is a bush. Hawthorne is
the poet/writer namely, Nathaniel of which
our city of Good Neighbors is so named. I
really will never get away from Hawthorne.
From the Beach Boys music to SpaceX,
Hawthorne will follow me wherever I go.
Eats on the 105
Did you see the food truck serving people up
on the 105 freeway last week when everyone
was stuck for two hours in a massive traffic
jam? That is pure American enterprise, supply
and demand. The truck had food, supply
and there was a demand for it. Why not?
Maybe some of those who partook actually
spoke to other motorist and got to know them.
This could be a good thing. The beer truck
selling on the freeway may not be advised.
God is good, Life is good
We have so much to be thankful for. God
loves us and cares for us. Yes, we live in a
world full of bad stuff, but all things work
for good for those who love Christ. Bad
things that happen in our lives can turn us
towards God and his love. As long as we
live in this world, there will be evil and we
will sin. But God promises to protect and
forgive us and we live in His grace. So, just
relax and have a . . .
