Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
Hawthorne Leads
the Way with
Building Blocks
Our fine city has been the leader in
everything from airplanes to rockets
to electric cars to tunnels to now
preassembled hotels. Over 300 VIP’s came
to downtown Hawthorne on Tuesday to see
our new $86 million Marriott Hotel complex
be assembled. The hotel rooms are ready to
go. By this summer we will be welcoming
the next wave of tourists and business people
to the center of our city. Until recently the 4.2
acre site was full of downtrodden buildings
and parking lots that used to be the old HPD
station. Now, we will be the host to thousands
of people who come to SoCal for pleasure or
business. Once again Hawthorne is the trend
setter. We are on the cutting edge. We are
years ahead of our neighboring city who is
building a football stadium or our beach city
friends with their average homes so pricey that
you have to play in the NFL to own.
Hawthorne’s “Hometown
Pancake Breakfast”
Make a point to get out of bed early and come
on over to the Hawthorne Museum on St.
Patrick’s Day morning, Saturday, March 17
between the hours of 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. The
Hawthorne Historical Society will be holding
our 4th Annual Hawthorne Hometown Pancake
Breakfast. How much better can it get than
hot cakes, bacon, sausage, orange juice and
coffee? Bring your friends and family. The
price is right, $5 is all that you pay.
Golf Tournament
I would like to invite you to the Hawthorne
Parks and Recreation Foundation’s 29th
Annual Golf Tournament on Monday, April
16th. This year’s tournament is being held
at the Industry Hills “Babe Course”. The
schedule is as follows: 10 am Registration,
11 am BBQ Lunch, 12 noon shotgun start,
5 pm dinner. If you are interested in playing
or your company would like to be a sponsor,
please contact Dick Huhn at 310-643-9157. All
proceeds goes to the improving of our parks.
The “State of the City”
Luncheon
Mayor Alex Vargas will deliver his annual
“State of the City” address on Wednesday, March
21st over at the Memorial Center. Tickets to
the luncheon are $50 per person
and can be obtained by calling the
Chamber of Commerce office.
My Memoirs
As I am about to wrap up my
teaching career, only 63 more days
left as of today, I have been asked
by several people whether I was
going to write a book about my 41
years of being inside the confines
of the educational community. I never have
thought of myself as a scholar, an author, or even
a newspaper columnist. I have never thought
that I knew that much more than the average
Tom, Dick or Norbert. I consider these weekly
submissions as my “memoirs”. All of you
receive this as a free gift. Some of you feel
obligated to read it out of courtesy to me. Some
of you feel sorry for me so out of pure pity
you glance over it in between sips of your cold
ones. I have never thought that people would
want to pay to read a big collection of what not
thoughts. However, lately I have been made aware
of an uptick in my core readership. We may
be up at double digits soon. I’ve been thinking
of a title for my swan song reflections, “Shut Up
and Have a Cold One!”, “Lost in Hawthorne”,
“I’m not Good, You not Good, but God Is”:
How I won by being a big loser. Some
questions that I would like to pose would be:
Where in the heck will I be when I get where
I’m going? Why am I so blessed? Why can’t
I have more than one cold one before I get
sauced? I consider myself blessed to have had
the opportunity to clear my mind of these
random thoughts once a week for the past eight
years. I’ve learned much about myself. I hope
that I have brought something to your life. I’m
looking forward to the next chapter in my life’s
journey. No matter where our paths lead us, I
will look back with fond memories of these
times that we have shared. A favorite scripture
of mine is a source of much comfort: “For I
am convinced that neither death nor life, neither
angels nor demons, neither the present nor the
future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth,
nor anything else in all creation, will be able to
separate us from the love of God that is in
Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39. Keep
the faith folks. Enjoy a cold one and I will certainly
let you know when my publisher releases
the initial release of the hard copy edition on
Amazon with a list price of $29.99 plus the
10% Hawthorne sales tax. I have not decided
on which one of our two breweries to have
my book signing event at. I’ll let you know. •

Over 100 students from City Honors,

Inglewood Charter High School, Lennox

the event. Students started their morning at
Inglewood High School by hearing the motivational
speeches from five guest speakers:
SBWIB’s Executive Director Jan Vogel; Inglewood
Mayor James T. Butts, Jr.; Councilman
Alex Padilla; IUSD Superintendent Thelma
Meléndez de Santa Ana; and Executive Vice
President of IAACC Samuel Peña.
Butts shared his experience, goals growing
up and words of encouragement: “When you
focus on work, you focus harder on school

to prepare yourself for what your life is
going to be. We want to give you all the
opportunity that other kids never had when
they became of age,” he said.
Meléndez de Santa Ana expressed to
students, “You’re ready, you’re going to do
a great job today, you’re representing your
school -- but more importantly, you’re representing
yourself and your dream.”
The event offered students the opportunity
to learn about different fields, ask questions
and hear experiences from professionals they
shadowed. Among the 25 companies that
participated were City of Inglewood, 102.3
KJLH, Claris Health, EDD, Kaiser Permanente,
Petco, Salvation Army, SBWIB, U.S.
Army and more.
Students expressed learning about new job
opportunities. “I loved it and I’m going to
spread the word about this business,” stated
Lois, senior from City Honors.
