Community Dinner
Thursday, October 18th
The annual Hawthorne President’s
Council BBQ Dinner will be held this
year on Thursday, October 18th starting at 5
p.m. at the Hawthorne Memorial Center on El
Segundo Blvd. The dinner is only $5 for adults
and $2.50 for children. There is a raffle each
year and all of the proceeds go to the holiday
assistance program of the Presidents Council.
Each Thanksgiving and Christmas, the council
gives away hundreds of food baskets and gifts.
Come out and support a great cause. I love
seeing everyone there at this semiannual event.
I will miss two of my old friends who have
passed away since our Spring K9 dinner. You
will have an opportunity to meet most of the
candidates who are running for City office. If
you have a chance, ask them a few questions,
like what kind of cold ones do they like? Ask
them if they ever have read my ramblings
and whether they know how to enjoy life by
relaxing with a cold one and letting God love
them. Their answers to those questions will
tell you a lot about them. Forget about the
boring crap of making Hawthorne better, find
out what they are really made of. If more
Hawthornites would follow my prescription,
our City would truly be the City of Really
Happy Neighbors.
Veterans Celebration
November is fast approaching and the holiday
early in the month is Veterans Day. The
Hawthorne Veterans Commission will be hosting
their 4th Annual Veterans Day Celebration
on Saturday, November 10th at 7 p.m. at the
Hawthorne Memorial Center. This year they
will be recognizing all of the veterans who are
employed by the City of Hawthorne and all
the veterans who serve us in the Hawthorne
Police Department. Each year this event has
been a very popular and fun event. Music
and refreshments will be part of the night’s
agenda. We really do owe our veterans a lot
of recognition for serving us. This event is a
great way to show our appreciation.
Coming to Hawthorne
I hear that Hobby Lobby is coming to
Hawthorne. Rumor has it that the home craft
supply, hobby galore, and arty decorating store
will be going in next to Home Depot in the
old Sportmart location. Hobby Lobby’s owner,
David Green, is a man I can admire. Here a
little bit about him direct from Wikapedia:
In 1970, while a store manager with variety
store chain TG&Y, Green took a $600
loan and started a home business in his
garage assembling and selling miniature
picture frames. The business, Greco
Products, capitalized on a decorating
fad of the time. By August 1972 the
business had thrived to such an extent
that Green and his wife were able to
open a 300 square-foot store in northwest
Oklahoma City. In 1975, Green left his 13-
year career with TG&Y and opened a second
Hobby Lobby location with 6,000 square
feet of space. Green commits half of Hobby
Lobby’s total pretax earnings to a portfolio
of evangelical ministries and as of 2012, he
has donated an estimated $500 million. Green
has taken a public stance against the Patient
Protection and Affordable Care Act because
of its inclusion of a provision mandating that
companies include the “morning-after pill”
in their health coverage. Green comes from a
family of preachers and says he has built his
business squarely on biblical principles: “We’re
Christians, and we run our business on Christian
principles.”Green lives in southwest Oklahoma
City with his wife, Barbara. They have three
children. One son, Mart Green, is the founder
and CEO of Mardel Christian and Educational
Supply and of Every Tribe Entertainment. Son
Steve Green is President of Hobby Lobby, as
well as founder and primary funder of the Museum
of the Bible. Daughter Darsee Lett is
Creative Director for the Hobby Lobby stores.
Back in Hawthorne
I was driving down to Hawthorne on Sunday
and noticed the CalTrans flashing sign telling
me that the 405 freeway was totally blocked
at the 118 freeway. Little did I know that a
bus had flipped over the median divider and
hit a car coming in the opposite direction. So
started my return trip to SoCal. I came back
to check up on my company down here in
Gardena. The Christmas rush is right around
the corner and our nativity sales have already
begun to pick up. It is nice to be back in
familiar territory. I can almost put my car in
auto drive and it will navigate the streets of
the South Bay. It’s also nice to see familiar
faces and smiles of friends that I have missed.
Memories of good times will never go away.
“THE” 405
Have you ever noticed that people refer to
freeways by using the word “the” before the
number? In NorCal, that is a no-no. They can
tell that I’m from SoCal when I say THE 80
freeway. To get to my house in Orangevale
from Hawthorne, you take 405 to 5 to 99 to 50
and get off on Hazel. None of this “the” stuff.
