Medicare Cards from front page
or more than 10 percent of Medicare’s total
budget, was lost to fraud, waste, abuse and
improper payments four years ago.
An attempt by someone to steal your identify
isn’t always obvious, so officials offer some
defensive tactics that seniors and healthcare
consumers can take so they don’t become
victims.
They start with the advice to just walk
away if someone approaches you in parking
lots, shopping centers or other public areas
and offers you free services, groceries, transportation
or other items in exchange for your
Medicare number.
When the phone rings, simply hang up if
someone calls you claiming to be conducting
a health survey and asks for your Medicare
number.
Under no circumstances should you give information
to telephone marketers who pretend
to be from Medicare or Social Security and
ask for payment over the phone or Internet.
They may want to steal your money. The Los
Angeles County District Attorney publishes
regular announcements about fraud schemes and
tips for holding onto your money and identify.

Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
9-11 Remembrance
Next Tuesday is the day in American
history that will forever live in the
heart and minds of those of us who
lived through that day of horror 17 years ago.
I always led the remembrance ceremony at
my school each year and wanted to have our
young people made aware of what happened
and what it all means to us today. Some high
school students are too young to remember
the tragedy. It’s hard to imagine the killing
of 3,000 innocent Americans on our own
soil. “We shall never forget” has been the
slogan used by many to pay tribute to those
who died. As the years pass, the burning
image of the skyscrapers falling and people
jumping from windows tends to get blurred.
Like Pearl Harbor, the 9-11 attacks really
challenged us to think and treasure even more
our freedom and security that we enjoy here
in our country. With all of our diversity and
disagreement, we still can come together and
stand united as one people determined to
preserve peace and tranquility. If everyone
in the entire world would just relax and have
a cold one, all of this terrorism crap would
end. I can’t buy everyone a cold one, but you
and I can start by showing compassion with
random acts of cold ones. Or we could pay
it forward while buying others cold ones. If
I have convinced one soul to relax by having
a cold one, I feel that I have accomplished
my goal of changing my little world. All it
takes is one person and one cold one and
you never really know what impact it will
have on life as we know it. It makes me
feel so gratified that I can go to sleep each
week knowing that cold ones have made a
difference. Enjoy life, have a . . .
Hawthorne the City
I mentioned Hawthorne is a common name
for a street last week, so one of my loyal
readers reminded me that there are several
states that have Hawthorne cities. We all
know about Hawthorne, Nevada but did
you know about Hawthorne, New Jersey or
Hawthorne, Florida or Hawthorne, New York?
The City of Good Neighbors is by far the
largest in population of all the Hawthornes
in the USA. We have about 87,000 people
living in 5.5 square miles. Here are the other
populations at the 2010 census: Nevada: 3,269,
New Jersey: 18,791, New York: 4,586, and
Florida: 1,417. So, put all the other
Hawthornes together and they don’t
come close to Hawthorne, Cali. I recall
that when we had the dog shooting
protests of several years back, some
of our fellow Hawthorne cities were
receiving hundreds of emails and
phone messages that were intended
for our city communications center. There
is just no Hawthorne like Hawthorne, CA.
The city has always been and always will be
uniquely different. There is no place like it.
Prayers
It has come to my attention that two special
Hawthornites need our prayers at this time.
Mr. Bill Meyers, who has been active in civic
activities with the City of Hawthorne and
with the Ramona Neighborhood Association
is going through some serious health issues.
We pray for his recovery and for the doctors
who attend to him. Also, our Hawthorne
Kiwanis Club is in shock that long time
club secretary, Sheri Skaff was involved in a
major car accident and is in critical condition
with head injuries and many broken bones.
She has been the glue that kept the Kiwanis
Club together and running so smoothly for
so many years. We pray that she might make
it through this trauma and regain her health.
As long as we are praying, we always keep
our Hawthorne Police Department personnel
in our prayers as they go out into dangerous
situations daily. Hawthorne is so fortunate to
have such a great department protecting us
each and every day.
Random Thoughts
The smoke from the NorCal fires has been
decreasing and Cal Fire seems to have most
of the large fires under control right now.
Football is here. High school and college
started already, now the NFL kicks off. The
city election is coming up in November.
Time for some fliers to be appearing in your
mailbox and for some recorded phone messages
on your house phone that you never
pick up any longer now that everyone and
their grandma has a cell phone. Youth soccer
has begun. My two grandkids have their first
games this Saturday. AYSO starts up with
opening day over in the Glen. Thank you
all for reading. The spiritual word for this
week is: Perseverance. Galatians 6:9 says,
“Let us not become weary in doing good,
for at the proper time we will reap a harvest
if we do not give up.” Hang in there folks,
keep on doing good.
