Film Review from page 2
Her problems come to a head when a
doctor alerts her to the ways her current life,
drenched in anxiety and alcohol, is failing her.
She has high blood pressure and is risking
liver damage. The doctor suggests various
changes, including weight loss.
One bothersome element is this scene’s
emphasis on BMI and goal weights to gauge
Brittany’s health. BMI is a controversial
measurement, and the doctor’s other diagnoses
seem more than sufficient in guiding
Brittany. However, the film does emphasize
that Brittany’s eventual choice of running
is not about only weight loss, but the selfpossession
and community that comes with
joining a group of runners. It’s a film about
the grinding, satisfying process of making a
change, as the burned-out Brittany gradually
transforms her life.
Central to this transformation is Brittany’s
quiet reckoning with the garbage treatment
she’s allowed from friends, dates, and bosses,
believing it to be part of the deal when you
carry weight. The quiet way Brittany moves
into new relationships and drifts from the old
is magnificently handled.
Brittany Runs a Marathon walks a
thorny path in examining her relationship
to her body and weight loss, but it’s wonderful
to have a character as complex and
snarky as Brittany to explore these topics
alongside. I can’t wait for the world to meet
her too.
Brittany Runs a Marathon is now playing
at ArcLight Cinemas and The Landmark,
opens everywhere September 13, 2019. •

Summary of Ordinance 2187 Amending
Chapters 10.36 (Stopping, Standing, and
Parking), Section 190 (Use of Streets for
Parking and/or Storage of certain Large
Vehicles, Including Recreational Vehicles
and House Car, Prohibited) of Title 10
(Vehicles and Traffic) to the Hawthorne
Municipal Code.
Pursuant to Government Code section 36933(c),
the following constitutes a summary of Ordinance
No. 2187 which will be considered for adoption
by the City Council at its regular meeting on
September 10, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. Pursuant to
California Government Code section 36933(c)
(1), the City Council has directed the preparation
and publication of a summary of Ordinance
Nos. 2187 which seeks to regulate the parking
of oversized vehicles, including recreational
vehicles, in terms of time limits during which the
parking of oversized vehicles will be allowed,
applications and fees for permits, extensions of
time to park oversized vehicles, and locations
in which the vehicles may be parked.
Ordinance 2187is an amendment to the
Hawthorne Municipal Code (HMC) which
address the use of streets for parking and/
or storage of certain large vehicles, including
recreational vehicles and house car. Generally,
the parking of these vehicles in residential districts
on public streets will be prohibited unless an
Oversized Parking Permit is obtained at the
Hawthorne Police Department. Ordinance
No. 2187 also allows the City Traffic Engineer
to issue permits for disabled persons to obtain
an Oversized Vehicle parking permit under
delineated circumstances.
The City Council finds and determines that
there is no possibility that the adoption of this
Ordinance will have a significant effect on the
environment. Accordingly, this Ordinance is not
subject to the requirements of the California
Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to
Sections 15061(b)(3) and 15378 of Division 6
of Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations.
If any section, subsection, sentence, clause, or
phrase of this Ordinance is for any reason held
to be invalid or unconstitutional by a decision
of any court of any competent jurisdiction,
such decision shall not affect the validity of
the remaining portions of this Ordinance. The
City Council hereby declares that it would
have passed this Ordinance, and each and
every section, subsection, sentence, clause, or
phrase not declared invalid or unconstitutional
without regard to whether any portion of the
Ordinance would be subsequently declared
invalid or unconstitutional.
A certified copy of the entirety of the text of
Ordinance No. 2187 is available both on the
City’s website and also in the office of the City
Clerk, 4455 West 126th Street, Hawthorne,
California, and is open for public inspection.
Pursuant to Government Code section
36933(c), the summary Ordinance No. 2187
was published at least five (5) days before
the ordinance was adopted on September
10, 2019 at a duly convened regular meeting
of the Hawthorne City Council.

we relax and put our trust in Him, we have
real life, abundant life. Happy Labor Day,
relax, have a cold one, be yourself, don’t
worry, don’t try to impress, God always will
have your back.
Beer Drinking Faithful
Some of you think I’m full of it, always
talking about having a cold one and God. Well,
I’m not the only one, here are two of the
top best known beer loving Christians:
1.) Arthur Guinness: The Beer Mogul The
man behind the world’s most famous stout
was also a devout Christian. Inspired by a
sermon from John Wesley, Arthur Guinness
decide to turn his brewery and his brand
into a force for good. As Stephen Mansfield
explains in his book The Search for God and
Guinness, the beer mogul—whose beverage
was seen as safe alternative to the hard stuff
prevalent throughout Ireland and England at
the time—founded some of his country’s first
Sunday schools and gave generously to the
poor. 2.) Martin Luther: The Homebrewer The
Father of the Reformation also happened to
be an enthusiastic home brewer. The sharptongued
reformer was a prolific writer, and
his love of beer—especially ones made at
his home by his wife—frequently showed
up in his letters and correspondence. So,
here’s to you 14 loyal critics, I’m enjoying
life, you can be a fuddy duddy if you want,
for me I’d rather go out happy.
