Wow! All of America’s
History in One Week
As I mentioned to you last week, Linda,
aka my ol’ lady, and I spent the past seven
days taking our two grandkids on a tour of
the center of our nation’s history and
power, Washington DC. We ended
up walking over 12 miles some of
the days in 90 degree weather with
high humidity, but it was all worth
it. Our six year old grandson wanted
to see every museum. He wanted to
look at every exhibit. Along with the
13 Smithsonian Museums, there are all the
monuments and other side attractions like that
white house where some guy tweets a lot from.
We traveled to Gettysburg and Mount Vernon.
We visited Ford’s Theater and the Pederson
House across the street where Abe passed away.
We saw how the FBI investigates and one of
the kid’s favorites, we visited the Bureau of
Printing and Engraving where they saw a lot
of green backs being printed. The neat thing
is the fact that almost all of the museums
have free admissions. Staying with friends in
Virginia and riding the Metro into the capital
area made it affordable and pleasant. On our
last day, we visited both the American Indian
and African American Museums. Both were
excellent at depicting how life was for groups
of people who have quite the history in this
great nation. We saw both the good and the
bad that have made us who we are today. I
wonder how our country would be different if
there was not a Union victory at Gettysburg,
or a George Washington refusal to become
king of the States after his Revolutionary
War victory, or an Abraham Lincoln freeing
of the slaves. God has certainly blessed us
as a nation. Have we always done the right
thing? No. However, the freedoms we enjoy,
the human rights and life that we now enjoy
certainly has been paid for by courageous
men and women who put their country first.
We should be grateful to live in the greatest
country in the history of the world.
Who in the Heck is this Dude?
Norb Huber is a former Hawthorne resident
and past City Clerk of Hawthorne. He currently
lives with his old lady in Orangevale,
CA. which is 400 miles north of the City
of Good Neighbors. He enjoys playing
golf, running Outdoor Nativity Store and
rambling on and on about life around him
when he tries to write a weekly diatribe of
nonsense. Oh yes, he wants you to celebrate
the fact that God’s love and forgiveness is
so unconditional and so undeserving that we
are obligated to celebrate our joyous freedom
from sin and damnation by having a cold
one or two. His ramblings might have been
read by over 10 somewhat loyal readers for
the past eight years.
