After School Programs for IUSD
Get Support from City Council
By Haleemon Anderson
With the 2019-‘20 fiscal year underway,
The Inglewood City Council took action
at Tuesday’s meeting to provide recreation
programs for local schools and solidify upcoming
municipal elections. The Inglewood
Parks, Recreation and Community Services
Department will staff the After-School Recreation
Program (ASRP), bringing supervised
activities Monday through Friday at 10 of
Inglewood Unified School District’s (IUSD) 13
elementary and junior high sites. The ASRP
will operate daily from 2-6 p.m. beginning
on August 19, the first day of school. Host
campuses will include Bennett-Kew, Centinela,
Highland, Hudnall, Kelso, Oak, La Tijera,
Payne, Woodworth and Worthington. Fees
for participants are $63 per month, per child.
The City of Inglewood has a longstanding
relationship with IUSD to provide highquality,
safe and affordable afterschool care
for local families. The program typically
serves 440 students, ages 4-13. Recreation
and Community Services Director Sabrina
Barnes will administer the program.
The Council also voted to align the City’s
general municipal elections with statewide
elections, with the first iteration coming
November 2020. The action comes three
years after the California Voter Participation
Rights Act (CVPRA) was signed into effect
by then Governor Jerry Brown. The initiative
is designed to discourage low voter turnout
by having local elections fall on the same
date as statewide elections.
The change will have extend all four elected
council seats for an additional year, as well
as the five school board positions and the
posts of city clerk and treasurer. Inglewood
Mayor James T. Butts’ term will not be affected
by the change.
In public comments, Kelly Clark, a staff
attorney for LA Water Keepers, spoke on
behalf of non-profit coalition Smarter Water
LA and asked the Council to oppose a local
water desalination project. “I am here to ask
you to formally oppose the West Basin Water
District’s proposed water plant,” said Clark.
She told the Council that a lot has changed
since it originally supported the project, set
to be built in El Segundo. Desalination is a
process whereby ocean water is transformed
for drinking and other fresh water purposes. “It
doesn’t make sense to pursue desalinization,”
added Clark, “when it is the most expensive
method.” Several South Bay cities and agencies
have already come out in opposition to
the plant being built -- citing cost, energy
and environmental waste.
Several upcoming events were announced.
The Inglewood Airport Area Chamber
(IAACC) of Commerce will host a back
to school event this Saturday at 603 Grace
Ave. from 2-5 p.m. Director Eric Holly announced
IAACC’s upcoming Police and Fire
Appreciation Luncheon on Sept. 19, from
11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the airport Crowne
Plaza on Century Boulevard.
Resident Toni Williams of 77th Street, a
homeowner for 17 years, invited the Council
and City support staff to a neighborhood
block party on Aug. 24.
Councilmember George Dotson noted
several events in his district. On Aug. 21, he
will host an estate planning workshop. On
Sept. 7, he will have his annual shredding
event at 4901 Manchester. And on Sept. 28,
Dotson will host a fundraiser entitled City
of Champions 5K Walk/Run at Edward
Vincent, Jr. Park.
Councilmember Alex Padilla will host his
6th Annual Picnic and Chili Cookoff on Sept.
7. Padilla said there is one stop left in the
competition, which will take place at North
Park from noon until 4 p.m. The following
Saturday, Padilla announced, there will be
a Hispanic Heritage event on the City Hall
campus. The Sept. 14 event will feature a
classic car show.
Councilmember Ralph Franklin spoke about
the recent National Night Out, saying it was
a great experience. Councilmember Eloy
Morales noted a recent block club meeting
he attended. “It’s an opportunity to speak
directly to the residents,” he said.
Mayor Butts ended the meeting on a somber
note, speaking about Officer Andre Moye, Jr.,
who was killed in the line of duty on Monday.
The officer was performing a traffic stop on
the 215 freeway in Riverside that escalated
into a gun battle. Moye and the occupant of
the vehicle died on the scene, and two other
officers were wounded. Butts asked that the
meeting be adjourned in honor of Moye,
as well as three other Inglewood residents
-- Lonelle Jackson, Gilbert Rodriguez and
Pastor Gilbert Chambers who passed recently.
The Inglewood City Council meets every
Tuesday, unless otherwise noted, at 2 p.m.
in the Council Chambers on the 9th floor,
Inglewood City Hall. •
