Hall of Fame Banquet –
This Saturday Night
It’s not too late to RSVP for a great
Hawthorne celebration. The Historical
Society started a Hawthorne Hall of Fame four
years ago. There have been three banquets
and 15 people, organizations and businesses
have been selected to belong to this illustrious
group. Another five have been selected for
the class of 2019. The history of Hawthorne
has been full of outstanding achievement and
commitment to excellence. The five being
honored this year exemplify these same traits.
This year’s banquet is on Saturday, May 19th
at 6 pm at the Ayres Hotel located at 14400
Hindry Avenue in Hawthorne. The class of
2018 inductees include: Joe Contestabile, The
Hawthorne Kiwanis Club, Phillips Plumbing
and Heating, Chet Pipkin, and Emitt Rhodes.
The MC for the evening’s program will be
Christina Pascucci, KTLA anchor. It looks
like another great event for the residents of
Hawthorne to celebrate the accomplishments of
some great people and organizations. Please call
Dick Huhn at 310-643-9157 ASAP to RSVP.
Disaster Preparedness
Southern California Gas and the Hawthorne
Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a disaster
preparedness workshop on Saturday, May
19th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s
Community Center located at 11901 Acacia
Avenue in Hawthorne. A panel of experts
will tell us how to be prepare for earthquakes,
terrorism and other emergencies. This event
is free to the public and refreshments will
be served.
Community K9 Dinner
The Hawthorne Presidents Council will be
hosting a community bbq dinner on Thursday,
May 24 beginning at 5 p.m. at the Hawthorne
Memorial Center. All funds raised that evening
will go to the HPD’s K9 unit.
Emotions
God created us in His image and gave us
emotions. We can love or hate. We can
feel angry or feel happy. We can cry or
laugh. He created us with a conscience and
a brain so that we should know right from
wrong. I tend to wear my emotions on my
sleeve. My students, coworkers, and ol’ lady
can just about look at me and tell what my
mood is. My brother- and sister-in-law think
I’m more grumpy at the end of each
month when my meds start running
low. Of course it’s just the opposite
after having a few sips of a cold one, or
when my ol’ lady is not around to bug
me, then they think I’m on a “high”.
I tell them I get high on life, I don’t
need no stimulants to get me going.
These past few weeks I have had quite a few
of emotions with some long-awaited, impending
lifestyle changes forthcoming. Anxious
would be my dominant emotion right now.
I’m anxious to complete with my teaching
job. I’m anxious to move to Orangevale and
start a new chapter in my life with my ol
lady. I’m anxious and excited about retiring
and having a choice of what I can do Monday
thru Friday. I say all of this knowing full well
that the “grass is always greener” somewhere
else in the world. Just like it is always “6 pm
happy hour” some place on the face of the
earth. God tells us to number our days. He
wants us to enjoy every day that he gives us.
Anticipating future happy times is fine, but
the mundane, routine, normal, regular days
are also to be lived. Our days can be like
cold ones, refreshing from start to finish. Just
don’t let it go stale on you. Enjoy every last
drop, every last minute. God willing, He will
give us another day to wake up to. Keep in
mind that if we put our trust in God, we can
look forward to that “eternal happy hour” in
a mansion that He is preparing for us. Now
that is something to be happy about.
Should I Keep
on Trying to Write?
One of my 18 readers asked me to keep on
writing this column even when I don’t live in
Hawthorne. I asked why? She told me I’m
crazy and she enjoys readying my ramblings.
I have already told my newspaper bosses that
I’m going to stop. I’m sure there are much
more polished, professional and profound
writers out there to step in. Everyone is
replaceable. Life goes on. I’m old and worn
out like my advice. If you are not enjoying
a cold one by now, I can’t help you. Who
knows? Maybe there isn’t anyone as literarily
language-challenged as me.
