JPL Program to Bring
Interstellar Insights to Inglewood
By Tommy Vinh Bui, MLIS, Associate
Librarian, Inglewood Public Library
What young and impressionable mind isn’t
held irreparably enraptured by the wonders
of space and the swirling cosmos above? I
certainly wasn’T immune to the mysteries
looming just overhead several stratospheres
up. I recall fondly the countless evenings
spent chin held aloft and neck craned upward
wondering what distant galaxies were being
collided into existence at that very moment.
The stars twinkling tirelessly on high have
been a constant imagination-grabber and to
this day I still harbor a fervent frenzy toward
learning the intricacies of the universe and
rooting for mankind to inch closer and closer
to the ultimate and ever existential inquiry
of the universe: Why?
Fortunately I was able to direct that celestial
curiosity into something productive. As
a Young Adult librarian, I’ve always been
dedicated to finding new ways to engage
the community and provide thoughtful and
thought-provoking programming to the youth
that frequent the halls of our library. After
a thorough application process and mindexpanding
series of online trainings, I’m
chuffed to be able to say that I’m now a fullfledged
Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Solar
System Ambassador. And swelling within me
are the distant cheers of a preadolescent me
pumping his tiny fist into the air in jubilance.
“Huzzah!,” he might cry as his thin Douglas
Adams-reading book wrists flail akimbo.
The Solar System Ambassador program
is comprised of dedicated volunteers from
across the country and all are tireless advocates
for providing educational opportunities
to their respective communities. They strive
to engage and ignite curiosity and bring
information about NASA space exploration
missions and discoveries to the public. The
volunteers are gung-ho about galaxies and
ready and able to provide information and
get communities into an illuminating lather
about space exploration again.
I was a bit reticent about putting my name
into the hat to become a Solar System Ambassador
initially. I didn’t think I had the
scientific chops to qualify, in all honesty.
With the exception of my fondness for The
X-Files and all the valuable hours spent playing
the arcade game Gattaca, I really didn’t
have much of a background nor technical
knowhow in the field of space exploration.
But luckily, enthusiasm was enough and
I’m sure my experiences as a youth services
librarian helped lug my application over the
finish line. Now I’m ready and raring to get
my ambassadorship up and running. The program
includes opportunities for professional
development via teleconferences with NASA
mission scientists and engineers wherein
volunteers learn about the latest and greatest
in space science. It’s so that we’re better
informed and more capable of preparing quality
public engagement events and outreach
programming free of charge for the benefit
of the community at large. Events include
but aren’t limited to lectures, workshops, star/
eclipse parties and other hands-on activities
covering a wide range of topics.
And what better place to host such events
than at your local library? A constellation
of knowledge and information that, very in
keeping with space rocketry, can propel you
to unheard new heights of discovery. So have
a bon voyage and a blast-off to the library
and orbit around the Space section of our
shelves. You’ll find the odds of enlightenment
astronomically in your favor.
Liftoff to learning in t-minus right now. •

News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
Winter
SoCal is not used to having seasons.
We can all remember years where there
were very few days of rain or cold
weather. Lately, it seems like it’s just the
opposite. There are more days of rain than
not. Up here in NorCal, it’s just a little bit
colder and a little bit wetter. We all can say
to ourselves “we need this stuff”, but it sure
will be nice when it finally starts warming up
and stops raining. Rain, rain go away, don’t
come back another day. Luckily there have not
been terrible mud slides. And, all we have to
do is look at our Facebook pages to see how
the rest of the country is shivering in ungodly
weather. Cali is still the envy of so many.
These envious friends of ours just don’t know
that in a recent survey 50% of Californians say
they can not afford to live the Golden State
any longer. Uhaul charges triple for
trucks going out as opposed to coming
in since their fleet is depleted with too
few being left here. I just experienced
this when I rented a truck to move my
nativity store. In Sacramento Uhaul
is running specials for people willing
to rent and leave their trucks in LA or
SF. Everyone is trying to find that ideal place
to move to. The grass is deficiently greener
now along I-5 in the Central Valley of CA.
With the rain, the hillsides are lush and green.
Someone made the comment that they wish
that global warming would come back. God
blesses us with what we need. The miracle
of a created planet with all of it’s ecosystems
and the balance of air and water is another
reason for the existence of a great God that
loves us beyond our comprehension. As the
rain pelts down, look at it as another gift God
sends us. With water we live, without it we
suffer. See Calendar of Events, page 7 With God we live.

Wishing you love & happiness.
