Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
State of the Union
and State of the City
President Trump had his 90 minutes
to shine this past Tuesday night. The
Democrats had their chance to respond. So
now, that the State of the Union is over, they
can get back to fighting and getting nothing
done. That is not how our local city council
works. It seems that in the past few years, there
has been more of a coordinated effort to work
together to get Hawthorne headed in the right
direction. These efforts will be the highlight
of the upcoming luncheon where the State of
City is presented. The Hawthorne Chamber of
Commerce’s State of the City Luncheon to be
held this year on March 7th. Mayor Vargas
will be giving his 3rd update to the residents
and stakeholders of Hawthorne. The Citizen of
the Year Award will be announced at the event
also. Tickets can be obtained by calling the
Chamber office at (310) 676-1163. Nominations
are now being accepted for the Citizen of the
Year Award that is presented annually at the
State of the City Luncheon featuring Mayor
Alex Vargas. The deadline for nominations is
Tuesday February 19th. You may write a letter
nominating someone and either send it or drop
it off at the Hawthorne Chamber office, 12519
Crenshaw Blvd, Hawthorne. Or you may email
it to the Selection Committee Chairman Tom
Quintana at quprs@aol.com. Past Citizen of the
Year recipients will meet to make the selection.
Here We Go
Everything in one paragraph: It’s raining in
California and that is good. The snowpack
in the Sierra Mountains is above average for
this time of the year and that is good. The
Rams couldn’t get their offense going and
when they did, a stupid penalty changed
their momentum dramatically. At least the
big game was interesting to watch right up to
the end. Now that football is over, the NBA
and college basketball get us through
the early spring. Does anyone really
care about baseball any more? I do.
Spring training begins in about a week.
Now that I’m retired, I would love
just to go down to Arizona and see a
few spring games. It wouldn’t really
matter what teams I see, it would just
be a new experience. There are still too many
cars getting broken into in Hawthorne. Crime
is down, but my Nextdoor notifications still
gives me updates on stuff happening on the
residential streets of Hawthorne. The Hawthorne
Historical Society is still very active and keeps
the Hawthorne Museum open on Tuesdays
and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The
Museum is located over at Jim Thorpe Park
at 141st Street and Prairie Avenue. The next
Hawthorne City Council Meeting will held next
Tuesday, February 12th beginning at 6 p.m. in
the City Chambers at City Hall. If you have
never seen your city governance, then next
Tuesday would be a good first meeting to attend.
If you have something to say, you have
3 minutes at the start of the meeting during
oral communications to bring up a concern
before the council and also the citizens present
or who watch it via live streaming or on
cable tv. February is Black History Month and
my grandkids have learned all about Harriot
Tubman in their schools. They know about
the Underground Railroad and how Harriot was
instrumental in leading many of the slaves to
freedom. Here’s a little snippet her life story:
Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist
and political activist. Born into slavery, Tubman
escaped and subsequently made some
thirteen missions to rescue approximately
seventy enslaved people, family and friends,
using the network of antislavery activists and
safe houses known as the Underground Railroad.
America has a rich history. We tend to
dwell too much on the bad stuff our country
has done. For all of our bad, we still live in
the best and most loving and most generous
