ESHS Cross Country Program
Congratulations to this year’s ESHS girls
and boys cross country teams for their
well-deserved trip to the CIF State Finals
and to the Herald for finding space in last
week’s issue to celebrate their success and
making the community aware of this rising
gem in the athletic program at El Segundo
High School. Mr. Bolanos deserves much
credit in the recent success of the program,
but it should be pointed out that
the head coach of the first two teams in
ESHS history (of the five teams overall) to
reach the state finals (2010 & 2011 Girls)
was Mr. Doug Sersun.

On Pedestrians and Pollution
Last week, a reader suggested that
pedestrians can do their part to reduce auto
pollution by not crossing the street mid-block,
causing cars to needlessly slow down and
use more fuel to speed up again. While I
appreciate the safety implication of Mr.
Arabian’s letter, I would suggest a much
better way to reduce pollution is to turn our
cars off now and then, and walk or ride a
bike instead.
El Segundo is small, walkable and charming,
and new restaurants and destinations on Main
Street are great opportunities to skip the car and
take a nice walk. As our city adds new
bike lane stripes to some streets, riding will
become safer for residents and our kids, especially
around schools and new commercial
development.
An occasional walk or bike ride is the real
way to reduce pollution. As a bonus, it will
be good for your heart, too.
