epic showings in the CIF finals, making it
a great day for both teams. They’ll travel to

Basketball Teams
Look Like Winners
Both El Segundo High’s boys and girls
basketball teams have started their seasons
with a new look and lots of success. Both
are young teams with plenty of talent and a
new look offensively.
Boys Playing Solid Defense
The Eagles lost virtually their entire
starting lineup due to graduation or players
concentrating on other sports or other commitments.
So head coach David March has
adjusted his roster by promoting nine new
players from within his program. The new
look has made this an exciting team to watch.
They are passing better, playing a defense
that has frustrated their opponents and are
a better shooting team.
In their first three games, the Eagles have
not been tested. They faced a very beatable
Cabrillo team last night, so a 4-0 start would
be their best in three seasons. In their opener,
they made 6-14 three-point attempts in the
Eagles’ 66-17 win over CAMS. In their second
game, the Eagles outplayed Paramount 55-28.
Sophomore guard Preston Engel paced the
team with 13 points, and CJ Hardy added
12 points. El Segundo took care of a City
Section powerhouse when it defeated Dorsey
54-39. Hardy led an inspired defense that
limited the Dons to a miserable 38 percent
from the field. Hardy led the offense with
27 points and 15 rebounds, while the Eagles
took advantage of their free throw shooting by
sinking 25 of 34. The Eagles are on the road
for the next few weeks before hosting Sunny
Hills on Saturday night, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m.
Reese Jones leads a fast break for the Eagles against View Park. CJ Hardy has led the Eagles to a terrific start. He scored 27 points against Dorsey
Lady Eagles
Off to Winning Start
The Lady Eagles are coming off the program’s
first-ever league title, a 20-win season
and advancement to the CIF Southern Section
quarterfinals. So how do you top that
starting a new season? They scored 70 or
more points in each of the first two games.
It marked the first time in school history that
the Lady Eagles had scored back-to-back
70-point games.
Granted the schedule favored El Segundo
against a couple of teams that will struggle
this year. The way the Lady Eagles played
against CAMS (winning 74-24) and View Park
(73-20) should be an indication of how well
the team has improved offensively, defensively
and with their passing.
In the opener against CAMS senior guard
Hannah Chang led her team with 16 points and
three assists, while freshman sensation Leila
Sugimoto had 14 points. It was the passing
and unselfishness teamwork that stood out.
Head coach John Peterson has cleverly
developed a team that has a high basketball
IQ. It won’t be uncommon to see a team
with this much depth have a rotation of 10
players throughout the game.
In the second game against View Park, the
contest wasn’t as close as the 53-point differential
indicated. The Lady Eagles worked on
their press on defense and their offensive sets.
Storey Noble led all scorers with 13 points off
the bench while Akayla Burton had 10 points
and six rebounds and Kristen Tsukahira and
Bo Takehara each had nine points.
El Segundo plays in the Redondo Sea Hawk
Classic this week on Monday and Tuesday
and faces Legacy on Friday at 5:30 p.m. with
the finals set for Saturday. The team will
return home next Friday night at 6 p.m. to
host Morningside.
Kirby Onaga Stepping Down
The El Segundo High’s tennis program is
seeking a replacement for head coach Kirby
Onaga. Onaga is stepping down after guiding
the Eagles for the past 15 seasons. In that
time, the Eagles have won Ocean League and
Pioneer League titles and have advanced to
the CIF playoffs. This season, he helped guide
the girls team to the CIF Southern Section
semifinals where they lost to Notre Dame.
Those interested in becoming the boys
and girls next tennis coach are encouraged
