Diangelo Romano and Kaden Engel’s roles are
vital for the team’s success because of their
work ethic. Nakoa Parrish, a 6’7” forward, is
also another volleyball standout, but he has an
undisclosed injury that has sidelined him so far.
Four juniors return with experience and size.
All three are 6’3” or better and play bigger.
Colin Dionne looks to fill the role he provided
last season as a key reserve. Robby Pederson
has gotten taller and added size and could see
significant playing time with his shooting ability.
Max Quintana, who like Pederson is 6’5”, has
added length and size and has developed into
a key rebounder in recent scrimmages. Elijah
Mark is a legitimate guard who has good defensive
skills and an overall high basketball IQ.
Finally, two promising sophomores fill out
the roster. CJ Hardy is a quick athlete with a
soft shooting touch, while Leo Cagan’s upside
is limitless with his size and athletic ability.
The Eagles have already shown they can
compete with some very talented teams in two
scrimmages when they defeated City powerhouse
Crenshaw by 12 points. The season started on
Monday in the Battle of Rosecrans Tournament
that continues this week. The Eagles will play
just one home game in December when they
host Wiseburn-Da Vinci -- a team that returns
nine players from a squad that reached the CIF
finals last season.
Lady Eagles Look to
Return to Playoffs
The El Segundo girls basketball team will begin
a new era under head coach John Peterson, who
was hired shortly before the end of April. Peterson
takes the helm from former coach Randy
Kiehm , ho led the Lady Eagles for the past four
seasons. Kiehm resigned at the end of last season
to pursue professional education opportunities
with the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Peterson brings a wealth of collegiate coaching
experience on the men’s side with stops as an
assistant at the University of San Francisco,
Metropolitan State University of Denver and
Loyola Marymount University. He left LMU
in 2016 to start a high-tech basketball training
facility in Torrance called Shoot 360. Prior to
LMU, Peterson was the head coach for 14 years
at Ohlone Community College in Fremont,
California. He is the all-time leader in wins
(300), winning percentage (300-126, 71 percent),
conference titles (5), winning seasons (14),
most wins in a season (28) and 20-win seasons
(11). His teams also participated in the playoffs
in 13 of his 14 years, including two appearances
in the Elite 8 and seven in the Sweet
16. They also finished ranked in the top 20 in
13 of his 14 seasons (with five of those teams
ranked number one in the state at some point
during the season). Most importantly, 93 of
his players moved on to play at the four-year
level. Peterson was inducted into the California
Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches
Association Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Metro
State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006 as part of
the 1999-2000 National Championship team.
Peterson inherits a team that returns all but
two players from last year, which finished with
a 10-16 record. For the first time in a long
while, the Lady Eagles return more juniors and

seniors. Combined, this year’s squad will boast
18 years of varsity experience, with eight players
having started 10 or more games last season.
This year’s squad is led by a trio of seniors
who will have played their entire careers at the
varsity level, including guards Malia Hui and
Kailea Lee and post player Kayla Smith-Petty.
Rounding out the senior class are returning post
players Remecia Germeille and last year’s JV
team MVP Lydia Telahum.
Returning juniors include point guard Hannah
Chang, team MVP Reese Jones and Jordyn
Marconet.Moving up from the JV squad for
her junior year is Akayla Burton, who adds
depth to the post position.
Talented sophomores who return with varsity
experience include three guards Storey Noble,
Jordan Peterson and Kristen Tsubaki. Rounding
out the team will be three freshmen guards,
including Bo Takehara and Christina Tsukahira,
plus wing Azzah Bensrhir.
The Lady Eagles opened their season at home

Cross Country Teams
Advance to CIF Finals
The second-ranked girls ran a great race and
finished seventh in the CIF Southern Section
Division 4 prelims. The Eagles will advance to
the CIF Finals on Saturday at the Riverside City
X-Country Course. It marks the fourth consecutive
year they have qualified for the CIF Finals.
James Matlosz paced El Segundo, while
Nicolette Fulcomer, Gabby Lee, Tyler Matlosz,
Leah Guziak and Isabella Mai helped the team
qualify for Saturday’s championship race.
On the boys side, the Eagles ran three
sophomores with two running their first varsity
race and one competing in just his second
varsity contest. Even with the lack of varsity
experience, the Eagles demonstrated how deep
the team is and qualified for the CIF-SS Division
4 Finals on Saturday. This will be the team’s
fourth consecutive year to advance to the finals.
Arend Verfaillie led his team, followed by
Christopher Waites, Niall Glynn, Calvin Liang,
Lucky Schwartz, Cole Sterba and Cooper Haas. •
