Emergency Management Office
Welcomes Erika Martin
The El Segundo Emergency Management
Office welcomes Erika Martin to its team.
Erika was formerly a broadcast meteorologist
in several locations -- primarily in northeast
media markets. She was a fill-in meteorologist
for both Good Morning America and
World News Tonight in New York where
she was a meteorologist for CBS. Erika left
broadcast media and completed her MBA
with an emphasis in energy and sustainability
from Franklin Pierce. Since completing
her MBA, she has started her own business
and also founded a nonprofit called the Good
Earth Foundation. Erika’s title is Sustainability
Officer and she will help the City of
El Segundo with emergency management
efforts pertaining to climate change, sustainability
and energy. She will also assist
with meteorology and public awareness.
Erika received her Associate’s degree from
Santa Monica College and her Bachelor’s
in meteorology from Mississippi State.
She is originally from the Boston area and
currently lives in Marina del Rey.

Troop 772 Celebrates Eagle Scouts
El Segundo Boy Scout Troop 772 honors Jonny Felker, Mathew Felker and Wyatt Lane as its newest Eagle Scouts.
El Segundo Boy Scout Troop 772 advanced
three Boy Scouts to the highest rank, that of
an Eagle Scout. To earn this prestigious rank
a Boy Scout must work his way up the ranks
from Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First
Class, Star and Life before he reaches the rank
of Eagle. Earning the rank of Eagle is one
of the most prestigious and special moments
for a scout. Wyatt Lane, Mathew Felker and
Jonathan Felker will be a part of a small,
select group to attain the rank of Eagle. In
fact just five percent of all scouts who enter
Boy Scouts of America earn the rank of Eagle.
Since 1912, when Arthur Eldred earned the
first Eagle Scout ranking, one US president
and 38 astronauts have also earned the top
ranking of the Boy Scouts of America.
The new Eagle Scouts each completed
a required project. Lane’s project included
raising funds, purchasing materials and
supervising new fencing that separates a
portion of Center Street School’s playground
and the church that is next to it. Mathew
Felker’s project included putting together
updated emergency disaster kits for each of
the classrooms at El Segundo High School.
Jonathan Felker raised funds, gathered
materials, removed a damaged storage shed
and built a new tool and supply storage shed
for The Friends of the LAX Dunes. The new
shed is in support of multiple and ongoing
restoration of projects.
There are Boy Scouts in El Segundo, in
other troops, on the verge of ranking up
to Eagle. There could be as many as 12
in the next several months to achieve this
esteemed ranking, including Kyle McMullin
of Troop 267. His project will benefit the
El Segundo community for those wanting
to dispose of and retire an American flag
properly.

over 20 Scouts and parents and volunteers
from the El Segundo City Employee Association
spent a Saturday making repairs,
painting and cleaning the Scout House. The
photo above is from that event.
More volunteer work days are planned for
after the roof is installed. The Scout House
is home to two Cub Scout packs and three
Boy Scout troops as well as a Venture crew.
The building was originally moved to its
current location around 1950 from its previous
site in east El Segundo where it was
built as an employee recreation building for
one of El Segundo’s aircraft manufacturers.
“A Scout smiles and whistles under all circumstances.”
– Robert Baden-Powell
