Cruikshank said that collecting donations
for the veterans remains extremely rewarding
for her and her colleagues. She thanked the
“generous community” for their contributions.
Asked if any particular visits stood out over
the years, she mentioned that there were “lots
of stories” and admittedly times when a few
of “the greedy ones” cussed her out. However,
many more express their gratitude for even the
smallest kindness. “It is so heartwarming to be
thanked for a pair of socks, a shirt, a bar of
soap, even a coloring book,” Cruikshank said.
“Sad that there are such needs for our vets.”
When the Red Hats made that first visit
six years ago, it was at the behest of VA
West Los Angeles Medical Center Voluntary
Services Department Recreation Specialist
Carrie Brandlin – also a longtime El Segundo
resident. She has worked at the hospital for
over 30 years and serves as the point person
who communicates with the various volunteers
who provide in-kind, monetary and nonmonetary
donations to support the facility’s
efforts and programs. “El Segundo Cares has
been the main contributor for donating event
equipment for the veterans’ festivities, which
aid in a smooth activity, as well as organizing
clothing drives,” Brandlin said. “We appreciate
their continued support for these last five
years. Voluntary Service looks forward to El
Segundo Cares’ quarterly visits in which they
distribute clothing, hygiene kits, blankets,
underwear, t-shirts, socks, stationary and
snacks. These volunteers greet each veteran
with a smile, thank them for their service and
ask how they can help them.”
Looking to find ways to help has been
Cruikshank’s calling card. Her local community
involvement spans much of her 45 years
as a resident in town. A former El Segundo
City Council member who also owned an
antique shop, she additionally served on the
El Segundo School Board, was active in the
PTA and was President of the El Segundo
Senior Club. In 2015, the City of El Segundo
honored her as the El Segundo Older American
of the Year and celebrated her at that year’s
Elderfest event. While the personal recognition
is appreciated, Cruikshank’s only objective is
to raise awareness for El Segundo Cares and
to spur others to volunteer and contribute to
a cause that is dear to her heart. “Since the
beginning of this year, we have been receiving
an overwhelming amount of donations for the
veterans,” she reported. “Giving and helping
our vets is a small gesture compared to their
serving and protecting America...” •
