To start the second quarter, Beverly Hills
was pinned deep near its goal line after
a bad snap and fumble. Phillips caught Recupero
in the end zone for a safety and a 30-0
El Segundo advantage. To end the second
quarter, the Eagles drove to the Beverly
Hills 8-yard line. Then three consecutive
runs by Gunnar Rogers punctuated by a
1-yard dive gave the Eagles a 44-0 lead just
before halftime.
The Normans earned their initial first down
to open up the third quarter -- a 12-yard run
by Llai Dardashti. That run would be one of
the few highlights for the Normans. The other
was a 12-yard pass play later in the quarter.
El Segundo’s final score of the night was
set up when Michael Romero recovered
a loose fumble. The Eagles scored seven
running plays later when Alex Heflin capped
the drive by scoring on a 2-yard dive to
make it 50-0.
The Eagles travel to Culver City Friday
night to face the fourth-ranked Centaurs.
They’ll wrap up their regular season home
game schedule next Friday night when they
host the Lawndale Cardinals on Senior Night.
Cross Country Teams Excel
in Premier Northwest Meet
The El Segundo High cross country teams
were invited to compete in the Nike Hole
in the Wall XC meet. The meet was held at
Lynwood High School in Seattle, Washington.
It is considered one of the top high school
cross country meets in the Northwest with
teams from Washington, Oregon, California
and Alaska competing. The Eagles were successful
in both races where the girls won the
Division 2 race over the 40 teams entered, while
the boys team placed fifth out of 53 teams.
James Matlosz paced the girls and won the
race overall with an 18:28 time. Sophia Zago
placed third, Nicolette Fulcomer finished fifth
and Gabby Lee came in seventh. Freshman
Tyler Matlosz and juniors Latina Daniel and
Leah Guziak all finished in the top 68 out of
275 runners overall.
On the boys’ side, Arend Verfaillie paced
the Eagles with a sixth place overall finish in
a time of 16:19. Christopher Waites, Calvin
Liang, Marcus Ortiz, Niall Glynn, Jacob Rifkin
and Lucas Lux all helped lead their team to
an impressive finish. •

items, including the annual AVID college tour;
agreements for El Segundo High students to
participate in internship programs; District first
aid and CPR training; and agreements with an
accompanist to assist the El Segundo Middle
School (ESMS) choir department as well as
with a campus musician to work with the band
department. The consent agenda approvals
featured several additional items for ESMS: a
contract with a motivational speaker; approval
of a vaping presentation to be made during
a parent night; and agreements involving the
Halloween Dance and Winter Ball Dance.
The annual AVID college tour is slated to
commence on Nov. 8 and will allow the expected
40 or so students to visit Northern California
campuses San Francisco State, University of
San Francisco, Santa Clara, and UC Santa
Cruz. Internship programs that El Segundo
High students will be able to take advantage of
include West Coast Elite Basketball, Manhattan
Beach Animal Hospital, the El Segundo Police
Department, the El Segundo Fire Department,
and the Crowne Plaza Los Angeles Airport.
The only action item on Tuesday’s agenda
was the acceptance of gifts to the District,
including monies received from the South
Bay Classic ($13,200), and the Center Street
PTA ($17,295.53).
No information pending action items were
on the agenda, so the 80-minute meeting
quickly careened to Superintendent Moore,
who highlighted upcoming October events on
the informational calendar, including a School
Board candidate forum that will be held at
Center Street School on Oct. 17 at 9 a.m.
Board member reports followed, with reminders
about the Measure ES bond that will be
on the ballot on Nov.6, as well as the progress
made on the new aquatics center. Also mentioned
was the synergy between the City of El
Segundo and the District on returning television
“film days” to the community and affording
an alternative revenue stream for City coffers.
In other noted District news, the four women
running for three open School Board spots on
the Nov. 6 ballot were featured Monday evening
at a candidates’ forum hosted by the El Segundo
Woman’s Club. Candidates Emilee Layne, Amy
Rilling Grant, Paulette Caudill and Tracey
Miller-Zarneke were allowed two-minute opening
statements and then faced about a dozen
questions from the assembled citizens -- including
queries about the upcoming school bond
issue, school site safety and District test scores.
The evening wrapped up with all the candidates
making two-minute summation statements.
The next regularly scheduled El Segundo
School Board meeting will be on Tuesday
evening, Oct. 23. •
