couple of third-quarter goals. The defense was
solid, and Luc Giroux had five saves in the net.
The Eagles participated in the 54th El Segundo
Tournament, renamed the Henry Stuart
Invitational Water Polo Tournament in 2002. El
Segundo, which has won the tournament title
seven times, hosted the ten-team round-robin
tournament that featured some of the top teams
from the South Bay and the CIF Southern
Section. The Eagles defeated La Habra 18-4
but fell to tournament finalist Palisades 15-13
and Santa Monica 8-7.
In their consolation game, against Bay
League power Peninsula, the Eagles stormed
to an 8-1 first period lead on their way to a
17-6 win. Eeman Motallebi had three goals,
and Logan Fastman had two goals to lead the
Eagles’ first-quarter route. Tyler Thomas made
it 9-3, and Max Hale had a pair of goals in
the second quarter to make it 11-4. Carter
Williamson got into the scoring column to
make it 12-5, and Nolan Barrett fed Logan
Fastman inside for another score in the third
quarter. Motallebi scored two fourth-quarter
goals, and the Eagles won easily.
Girls’ Cross Country Teams Win
Central Park Invitational
The El Segundo Cross Country program
continues to demonstrate how talented they are
and how deep the program is. The girls won
the 40th Central Park Invitational in Huntington
Beach, their JV team also took home first-place
honors, and the JV boys team placed fourth.
The winning varsity girls team was led by
Tyler Matlosz, who finished second overall in
19:11 while (sophomore) Iliana Montenegro
finished sixth, (freshman) Yuvia Bernauer
seventh, (sophomore) Katy Durand twelfth,
and (senior) Erin Rifkin completing the scoring
for the Eagles.
The JV girls won their race paced by Sunny
Gale, who finished second overall. Angela
Schoenbaum, Makaela Fujimoto, Alicia Alvarez,
and Lana Kincaid completed the scoring for
the team. The JV boys team was nudged to
fourth place out of 14 teams. They were led
by Jasper Jahn, Benjamin Guzman, Nichols
Harvey, Anderson Cadman, and Charles Henry. •

Eagles would come.
Even though it’s the first league game, the
loss dampens the Eagle’s chances to advance
to the CIF playoffs. With arguably two of
the top teams in the South Bay in Lawndale
and North Torrance on the schedule, the
Eagles will need to play their best football.

Girls Volleyball
Wins Close Match
The Lady Eagles improved to 4-3 in the
Pioneer League and 12-4 overall with their
25-20, 25-21, 25-18 sweep of West Torrance.
In each of the games, El Segundo overcame
slow starts to rally for the winning points. In
the first game, Marley Smith helped her team
overcome a five-point deficit, and Annika
Klishevich’s net play evened the game at 9-9.
Smith evened the game at 19, and her hit gave
her team the first game win.
In the second game, West Torrance jumped
put to a big lead before El Segundo charged
back. Sophia Tomlinson helped key the rally,
and Marley Smith’s three aces helped punctuate
the 25-21 win. In the third game, the Eagles
trailed 4-1 before gaining a lead they wouldn’t
relinquish to sweep the Warriors.
The fifth-ranked Eagles are poised to finish
strong in the Pioneer League and advance to
the CIF Southern Section playoffs. They wind
up their league schedule next Wednesday with
a match against Lawndale at 4:30 p.m.
Boys’ Water Polo Dominates
North, Splits in Tourney
The Eagles improved to 3-1 in the Pioneer
League with their 22-0 win over North Torrance.
El Segundo sprinted to a 10-0 first quarter to
start the game. Ethan Ralls and Nikhil Bhakta
led the first-period romp, each scoring two
goals. In the second period, Vinny Baldino’s
Marley Smith helped ignite the sweep over West Torrance.
Luc Giroux shutout North Torrance and had seven saves against
Peninsula.
