Star with an undefeated 4-0 record. Injuries
and a fumble picked up and returned for a
touchdown led to their first loss of the season.
That fumble occurred on the opening kickoff
that was returned for a touchdown. Dylan
Acala found Alex Reis open on a wheel
route for a catch-and-run 40-yard touchdown
in the second quarter.
With the game tied at 6-6, the Eagles
kicked a 31-yard field goal to take a 9-6
lead. El Segundo extended their lead when
Grace Bloom helped lead her team over North Torrance. Norah Green and her doubles partner Morgen Jackson swept their match against North Torrance.
Caleb Smith caused a fumble, which Merrick
Boyles recovered in the backfield and
returned 85 yards for a touchdown. With the
Eagles leading 16-6, the Stars would mount
a comeback by scoring a third and fourthquarter
touchdown and hold on for a 20-16
win over El Segundo.
Girl’s Tennis Team Splits
The Eagles split their matches, winning
handily at home against North Torrance and
then losing their away match to an experienced
senior-laden team at Beverly Hills.
Against North Torrance, the Eagles jelled
together in securing a 14-4 victory. Winning
all three of their matches were Grace
Bloom and Hannah K Smith in singles. Sam
Robert and Mina Kreski swept their sets
in doubles. Additionally, the doubles team
of Morgen Jackson and Norah Green and
singles player Katrina Smith contributed two
victories each. The doubles team of Camille
Potier and Jordan Barash added an additional
victory to the final score.
The Lady Eagles’ three-match winning
streak was brought to a halt when they faced
Beverly Hills. The Normans took it to the
Eagles with a 14-4 win. Grace Bloom’s
unbeaten season singles record came to an
end. She was able to contribute a win for her
team. Additional victories were supplied by
Hannah A Smith in singles and Sam Robert
and Mina Kreski plus Audrey CdeBaca and
Maitri Kulkarni in doubles. The Eagles host

Lars Nootbaar Update
The former El Segundo Eagle has helped
the St Louis Cardinals advance to the Wild
Card game of the National League. He helped
the Cardinals win a franchise-record 15
consecutive victories by scoring the winning
run in one game, taking away a home run
with his catch, and his two home run game
against the Chicago Cubs. Nootbaar and
the Cardinals will travel to face either the
Dodgers or the San Francisco Giants in the
Wild Card game on Wednesday, October 6.
took advantage of a short field. Working from
Mary Star’s 48-yard line, Bucher picked up
a first down on a hard-earned five-yard run.
Mason Kahn’s two consecutive rushing attempts
set up a 14-yard passing touchdown to
Michael Wilson to give El Segundo a 21-14
lead. The Stars used some ingenuity on a
reverse on the ensuing kickoff, and Steven
Ceniceros went 91 yards untouched to score
for Mary Star. The PAT was wide, and the
Eagles clung to a 21-20 lead.
The Eagles gave the ball back on the ensuing
kickoff on a fumble, and Mary Star was
in business again. This time the Stars went
to the air for a score on a 27-yard pass play
to Ceniceros for a go-ahead touchdown and
27-21 lead.
The teams traded possessions twice before
the Eagles were in a position to return a
punt. Bucher returned the punt 47 yards to
the Mary Star 29-yard line before he lost
the ball that was recovered by Mary Star.
Once again, the defensive-minded Eagles
stopped the Stars and took over on their
own 35-yard line.
With time running down in the fourth
quarter, Menendez orchestrated his best
drive of the night. On third and four, he
connected with Michael Wilson for 23 yards.
On fourth and five, he found Sam Pachuta
for a 14-yard gain with less than four minutes
to play in the game. Working from the
11-yard line Conrad Bernstein rushed for
seven yards on his first rush of the game.
On the next play, he followed the blocking
of Gabe Blanco and Ariel Santiago on his
way to a four-yard touchdown run and tie
the game at 27-27 with 2:46 remaining.
Tucker Stevens then converted the PAT for
the winning 28-27 margin.
Coach Green was all smiles after the
game, knowing they had just stolen a win.
“The boys have worked hard and have jelled,
and they see what they can do when they
face adversity.” He reminded the team they
were 5-0, but the real season starts against
South Torrance. “We are now 0-0 with our
first Pioneer League game against a good
South team.”
The Eagles host South Torrance on Friday
at 7 p.m. The Spartans (3-2) are coming
off two consecutive wins. They are led by
sophomore quarterback Matt Espinosa (900
yards passing and seven TDs) and senior
running back Carson Hollandsworth (473
rushing yards and ten touchdowns).
