Warning on Catalytic Converter Thefts
Catalytic converter thefts are on the rise
in El Segundo! These thefts are taking
place because the converters contain metals
that can be scrapped for a quick profit. The
catalytic converter is part of your car’s exhaust
system and is found underneath your
vehicle. Thieves will often crawl under a
car to either unbolt the converter or simply
cut the pipes and steal the item. You will
immediately know if your catalytic converter
has been stolen because your car will make
a very loud continuous noise upon starting
the engine.
Owners of a Toyota Prius, Honda Element
and Toyota Camry should be particularly
aware because thieves have been targeting
these vehicles.
To lessen the chances of becoming a victim,
park your car in a secured garage whenever
possible. If a garage is unavailable, park in a
well-lit area so your car is visible to people
passing by.
If you see someone crawl under a car that is
parked on the street, or in a private driveway,
and then hear the sound of metal being cut
chances are the person is stealing the catalytic
converter. If you see or hear anything like
this, please call us immediately by dialing
911. See Something, Say Something!

Police Chief Participates in Navy
Leaders to Sea Program
On August 14, Chief Bill Whalen represented
the City of El Segundo and the El
Segundo Police Department as a participant
in the United States Navy Leaders to Sea
program. The day started with a brief tour of
the Navy ships in port by Captain Christopher
Engdahl, who is the Chief of Staff, Naval
Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Following
this, Chief Whalen and six other invited
guests were flown to the USS Manchester
on an SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopter. The USS
Manchester is a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS),
and is one of the newest ships in the United
States Navy fleet. Chief Whalen spent the day
with the Navy crew while they conducted
testing and evaluation of their weapons
systems, off of San Clemente Island. At the
conclusion of the tour he flew back to North
Island Naval Air Station. Chief Whalen said,
“It was an honor spending the day with the
outstanding officers and sailors aboard the
USS Manchester. They are an amazing crew
and will undoubtedly serve our nation well
as they project naval power down range in
support of our national interests. I also enjoyed
discussing how we can work collaboratively
in addressing our mutual issues, especially
in regards to recruiting quality applicants for
both of our professions.”
