The sixth inning proved to be one that saw
each team hitting grand slams. To start the
inning, Riviera had three consecutive singles
followed by Jimbo’s grand slam to build the
lead to 10-2.
El Segundo responded when McKinnon
reached on an error and Ochoa and Abitante
each singled to load the bases. With one out,
Lucas Bonham unloaded on a fastball and
sent it sailing over the centerfield fence to
close the deficit to 10-6. Dominick Kopecky
singled to start another rally, but the comeback
fizzled out and ESLL was sent to the
loser’s bracket.
El Segundo played an elimination game on
Monday and would have had to win Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday to advance.
The 10-year-old all-stars had an easy
time when they rolled through the District
36 tournament averaging 14 hits per game.
The section tournament would be different,
at least in the first two games.
El Segundo faced West L.A. Little League
to start the tournament run and faced a tough
pitching staff. The result was a 3-1 loss.
ESLL managed just three hits, including
two by Logan Brooks and an RBI double
Lincoln Quaintance for the team’s only run.
Facing elimination, ESLL took on Del Rey On a controversial call, Brett Abitante is called out at home plate as Riviera Little League catcher Noah Jimbo readies to apply the tag.
Cole Knupfer. In the third inning, Del Rey’s
Garrett Boyd reached on a fielder’s choice,
stole second base and later scored on an
error to give Del Rey a 1-0 lead.
ESLL, which had singles in each of the
first three innings but failed to score, had a
potential big inning get away in the fourth.
Gio Blanco singled to lead off the inning
and Knupfer ran for Blanco. Jake Danford
belted a fly ball over the head of Del Rey
centerfielder Brogan Comer for what should
have been an easy double. Knupfer, thinking
the ball had been caught, stopped between
first and second base when he was passed
by Danford and called out. Andre Sugden
then singled, but the rally went nowhere and
ESLL found itself still trailing 1-0.
In the deciding sixth inning, El Segundo’s
comeback was a thriller. Wagner-Bagues
slapped a single to right field and took second
base on a wild pitch. Lincoln Quaintance tied
the game with an RBI single to centerfield and
took second base on the throw to the plate.
With one out, Danford’s RBI single scored
Quaintance to ignite a walk-off celebration.
El Segundo would have to win elimination
games Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to
advance to the Southern California tournament
in Corona. •
Little League. This was a game that was
short on runs, but long on excitement. Del
Rey loaded the bases in the first inning, but
ESLL starter Joaquin Wagner-Bagues induced
an inning-ending double play from Logan
Brooks to second baseman Jordan Slavens to
