a walk, and Tim Klug was hit by a pitch, but
they were both left stranded. In the second
inning, Anders Tipton drew a 10-pitch walk
but was left at second base. In the bottom
of the third Forthuber singled, but was left
in scoring position.
With the game, a scoreless tie in the fifth
inning, the Stars broke through. Aiden Barbosa
singled and stole second base. Kevin Blake
singled, and Barbosa went to third base.
Grady Lubs’ sacrifice bunt scored Barbosa
to make it 1-0. Shaun Conley’s sacrifice fly
scored Blake to text the lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Angels
threatened to score thanks to Jack Pintens and
Nathan Ibarra drawing walks. Reed Abrams,
who had shut down the Angels through the
first four innings, wildness took over, and Max
Martinez replaced him. He struck out the next
three Angel hitters to get out of the inning.
In the sixth inning, the Stars loaded the
bases when Tristan Foster led off with a
double, and Martinez was walked. Kyle
Whalen then drew a walk, but the Angels’
Dominick Kopecky worked out of the jam. The
Angels had their chances in the sixth inning
when Mateo Heredia walked, and Brendon
Pate reached base on an error. But Martinez
struck out the side, including two in a row.
In the seventh inning, the Stars extended
their lead. Kevin Blake singled, and two batters
later, he scored on Jordan Blake’s RBI
single to make it 3-0. The Angels didn’t go
down without a fight. Anders Tipton drew
a base on balls, and Nathan Ibarra singled.
With one out, the game ended on a doubleplay
on a highlight catch in centerfield by
Reed Abrams and the perfect throw to first
base to double up Ibarra and end the game.
Championship Game
The Oaks and Stars met for the title two years
ago, and the Stars defeated the Oaks 7-2. So
this season, the Oaks were looking to avenge
that loss, while the Stars were gunning for
their twentieth league title. The season came
to an official close with a game highlighted
by 12 walks and a game that ended with a
ten-run rule. The Oaks benefitted from most
of the free passes and defeated the Stars 11-1.
The Stars scored early when Grady Lubs
drew a walk to start the game. Reed Adams
drew a walk, and Lubs scored on Adan
Barbosa’s RBI single. In the second inning,
Max Martinez struck out seven in three relief innings to help send the Stars to the championship game.
the Oaks drew four walks to Aiden Corral,
Lincoln Quaintance, Porter Robbins, and
Damian Espino to tie the game at 1-1.
In the third inning, the Stars’ Kyle Whalen
was hit by a pitch, but was later caught trying
to steal the home plate that ended the inning.
The Oaks took the lead for good when Dylan
Immel singled and later scored on Dylan
Garcia’s RBI single.
The Oaks would get a three-run double
from Immel, an RBI double from Lincoln
Quaintance, and RBI walks by Jake Stein and
Vinny Baldino and go on to win the league
championship.
It was a gratifying win for the Oaks in front
of a large crowd that was not restricted by
Covid protocols. Oaks manager Arnel Celestial
was thrilled for his players. Not so much for
the championship win but for what they had
to endure through a modified season that
didn’t allow many practice sessions. “They
had a short time together to bond, and it’ll
be a memory they’ll never forget.”
