Protect Our Students and Teachers
We need to address gun violence in America,
in particular its impact on our schools, students
and teachers. Between the Columbine
High School massacre in 1999 and the Santa
Fe High School shooting in 2018, over 141
children and adults have been killed and
another 284 injured by guns in our nation’s
schools. In 2018 alone, there have been 23
school shootings in the United States where
someone was hurt or killed. That’s an average
of one shooting per week this year.
There is no easy fix in sight, but there are
steps we can take right now to protect our
kids and teachers. I’m not a security expert,
but I regularly work at many very secure
locations e.g., federal buildings, courthouses,
police stations, airports, etc. , and they all have
similar safety protocol. These include secure
perimeters with cameras throughout the facility,
usually one point of entrance equipped
with metal detectors and x-ray machines for
bags, and most importantly, armed security
guards. To access these sites, you have to
show proper ID and provide a contact person.
A comprehensive look at these and other safety
measures, such as reinforcing classroom doors
and windows from these attacks, needs to be
done as a community priority. I realize the
cost involved would be significant and would
change the look and feel of the schools, but
wouldn’t it be worth the cost?
Let’s develop, fund and implement a school
safety plan now.

El Segundo Music Teacher is Quarterfinalist
for GRAMMY Music Educators Award
El Segundo elementary school music teacher
Heather Breene-Ukrisna was recently selected
as a quarterfinalist for the 2019 Music Educator
Award presented by the Recording Academy
and GRAMMY Museum. Upon being selected
from 2,800 initial nominations received for
the award, Breene-Ukrisna says she is “proud,
excited and honored to be one of the 188
teachers from 177 cities selected as a finalist.”
The semifinalists will be announced in
September and will receive cash honorariums,
with generous support and resources
provided by the Ford Motor Company Fund.
The Music Educator Award recognizes current
educators who have made a significant
and lasting contribution to the field of music
education and who demonstrate a commitment
to the broader cause of maintaining music
education in the schools.
Breene-Ukrisna moved from New York City
to Los Angeles in 2013 where she started
teaching elementary general music and band
with Education Through Music – Los Angeles.
She subsequently became the co-director
of the elementary band programs for the El
Segundo Unified School District (ESUSD),
as well as the flute-teaching artist for the
Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles. She now
calls the El Segundo Unified School District
her full-time home where she is the music
teacher at Richmond Street School and the
kindergarten music teacher at Center Street
School. Breene-Ukrisna also works with the
South Bay Music Association’s after-school
music programs and Summer Symposium.
Recently seen conducting ESUSD elementary
bands at the annual spring concert, the
audience was entertained by the musical
talents and poise her young students displayed
during their performance.
