All-Star team in the All-American Games.
Taylor headed to Oklahoma City (June 8-10)
to compete in a special tournament held at
the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.
The ESGS all-star teams have had a great
deal of success in recent years. Last season,
the 10U girls won three games at the Western
National tournament and two years ago the
14U team placed second overall in a field
of 64 teams. Teams in the 8U/10U/12U/14U
divisions have already begun and are several
tournaments into their all-star season.
Early highlights include back-to-back
second place tournament finishes for the
12U team in Penasquitos (San Diego) and
Camarillo. The 8U team captured first place
honors at the Camarillo tournament. In the
championship game, there were six tie or lead
changes. The exciting finished was capped
off by a walkoff RBI single by Madeleine
Ferrier that scored Delaney McAndrews.
Next up for the Gundo girls is the Laguna
Niguel tournament starting Friday.

Awards Handed Out for Baseball,
Softball and Swimming
The season-ending awards for the baseball,
softball and swimming teams were handed out
recently. It was an impressive spring season in
which all three teams won Ocean League titles.
The baseball team put together a season
of 21 wins and an Ocean League title few
outsiders thought was possible. With a team
devoid of experience and with new leadership
leading the way, the Eagles advanced to the
CIF Southern Section quarterfinals after doing
the unthinkable and disposing the top seed in
the second round.
The team was well represented on the All-
Ocean League squads. The MVP of the Ocean
League went to shortstop Benny Casillas, who
batted a team high .366 and was considered
one of the top shortstops in the South Bay.
Most Outstanding Player went to pitcher Quin
Kirsten, who was 5-0 in league play. Selected to
the first team were senior third baseman Ethan
Burner, junior pitcher Aiden McRoberts and
sophomore catcher Julian Rodriquez. Selected
to the second team were senior designated hitter
Cameron Dornblaser, who hit .375 during
the Ocean League schedule, and senior first
baseman Ian Bonham.
Team awards named after past individuals
and teachers who helped inspire players in the
program were also handed out. Casillas won the
Ken Brett MVP Award and the George Brett
Award for the highest batting average. Ethan
Burner was awarded the Robert Kingston for
Most Inspirational Award and Mike Mc Cready/
Craig Cousins Award for Clutch. Quin Kirsten
won the Scott McGregor Best Pitcher Award.
Perhaps the most important of all the awards
were named after two former El Segundo High
School educators. Kirsten, with a 4.6 GPA,
won the Richard and Kathy Peterson Highest
GPA Award. Matt Romero was awarded the
inaugural Chuck Schaffer Good Guy Award and
Bailey Davis won the Bobby Floyd Award for
the Most Improved Player. Named to the 50th
Annual South Bay All-Star team for seniors
were Casillas, Dornblaser, Burner, Romero
and Kirsten.
The softball team’s remarkable run to an
Ocean League title and a CIF Southern Section
Division 4 finals appearance didn’t go unnoticed
when it was time to hand out individual and
team awards. The Eagles were 25-7 overall
and 9-1 in the Ocean League. Senior pitcher
Kaili Reitano was the Co-MVP who went
4-0 in league play and hit .367. First team
members selected were senior outfielder Audrey
Butler (.392), senior third baseman Julia
Chavez (.419) and freshman catcher Sophia
Marrero (.377). Second team members were
senior Adri Hebert and sophomores Katie
Croxall and Mya Bennett. Named to the 27th
Annual South Bay All Star Game for seniors
were Adri Hebert, Audrey Butler, Kaela Little,
Julia Chavez and Kaili Reitano. Reitano was
the only Eagle named to the All-CIF Southern
Section Division 4 team.
The team awards handed out went to Reitano
(MVP), Croxall (Offensive MVP for her .444
batting average), Kaela Little (Defensive MVP),
senior outfielder Chloe Meza (Most Improved),
Julia Chavez (Unsung Hero Award) and Audrey
Butler who earned the Coaches Award.
The All South Bay Swim Teams were announced
and junior sensation Dylan Chen
was named to the 50 and 100 freestyle teams.
Sophomore standout Gabriela Crother-Collago
was named to the 500 freestyle team. •
Kaili Reitano was co-MVP of the Ocean League. Sophia Marrero hit .377 and was named to the All- Ocean
League first team.
Bailey Davis won the Bobby Floyd Award for the Most Improved
Player.
Benny Casillas won the Ken Brett MVP Award and the George
Brett Award for the highest batting average.
Quin Kirsten won the Scott McGregor Best Pitcher Award and the
Richard and Kathy Peterson Award for the highest GPA (4.6).
