Senior Class Thanks Herald
As Senior Governor of the class of 2020 I
would like to express the gratitude of the class
of 2020 for all of the hard work that has gone
into recognizing this year’s graduating class.
The Herald has been instrumental in helping
us regain some of what we lost in these trying
times and we are extremely thankful. There
is so much that’s goes on behind the scenes
to make things like this happen and it means
the world to us. Thank you so much!
– Jake Layne

This morning on my regular walk around

included resources, just a few websites, articles,
and books, to educate oneself about the difficult
and dark events of recent days. Another was a
simple checklist asking members of El Segundo
to reflect on how their experience of the world
might differ from the experiences of those from
a different race. I felt proud to see these simple
flyers. A harmless message to our neighbors
of color, simply saying “We see you. We
support you. We’re trying.” On my afternoon
walk, I was dismayed to see the flyers had,
all but one, been torn down. The one remaining
had scrawled across the page expletives
and white supremacy narratives. Shameful.
I would expect more from a community that
prides itself on its small, hometown feel. I sincerely
hope that “small” feeling doesn’t extend
to small mindedness. Neighbors and community
members, we must ask ourselves: what kind
of community do we want? What kind of El
Segundo will we promote? I hope it’s one that
is capable of self-reflection, understanding, and
kindness. El Segundo, we can do better. We
must do better. El Segundo for all.
