Former Mayor Gets
All the Way to the White House
Sepulveda Name Change
to Pacific Coast Highway
The plan to change the name of Sepulveda
Boulevard to Pacific Coast Highway within
El Segundo’s city limits from Rosecrans
Avenue to Imperial Highway is now moving
forward. The El Segundo City Council originally
approved the action during its meeting
on April 18, 2017 meeting, but had to wait
for subsequent sign-off from the California
State Department of Transportation (Caltrans),
which owns and maintains the roadway. The
latter approval occurred on April 4, 2018.
El Segundo’s Economic Development
Advisory Council (EDAC) recommended the
name change to the City Council as part of
bolstering local business attraction efforts.
In addition, the City recently launched a
hospitality and tourism marketing campaign
to draw visitors to El Segundo’s hotels,
shops, restaurants and other attractions. The
goal is that the name Pacific Coast Highway
will help visitors who are not familiar with
the area recognize El Segundo as a thriving
coastal community and a great place to
work and visit.
The sign installation work is expected to
be completed during the first weekend in
June. The City has confirmed with the US
Postal Service that mail addressed to either
Sepulveda Boulevard or Pacific Coast Highway
will be delivered for 24 months (through
June 30, 2020) to facilitate the change for
the property owners. The North or South
(Sepulveda) designation will remain with a
business’ PCH address.
For any questions, please contact Public
Works Director Ken Berkman at 310-524-2356
or via email at kberkman@elsegundo.org

West Basin Extends Comment
Period on Desalination Project
West Basin Municipal Water District (West
Basin) announced last week that the public
comment period for the draft environmental
impact report (EIR) for the potential ocean
water desalination facility in El Segundo has
been extended 31 days through Monday, June
25. The total comment period is now 91 days.
The report is available online at www.
westbasin.org/desal (print copies are at West
Basin’s district office at 17140 S. Avalon
Blvd., Carson, CA 90745) as well as at several
locations in the agency’s service area. The
general public is encouraged to attend an
informational open house on Saturday, May
12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Richmond Street
Elementary School (615 Richmond Street,
El Segundo). Comments on the draft EIR
may be submitted at the meeting, via mail or
hand-delivery to the West Basin Carson office,
or by e-mail at DesalEIR@westbasin.org,
or online.
Key documents referenced in the draft EIR
for the desalination project, which support the
analyses, are included in the appendices. West
Basin also posted planning and research
studies online at http://westbasindesal.org/
research-and-planning.html. Other referenced
documents cited and listed in each section
of the draft EIR may be accessed in-person
at West Basin’s Carson office. Interested
parties should send an email to DesalEIR@
westbasin.org to request an appointment to
review the documents. The email should
include the section number (e.g. Section 5.3
- Biological Resources - Terrestrial) and the
full citation (author, year published, title of
the document) of the referenced documents to
be reviewed. Please allow five calendar days
to set an appointment so that the documents
may be prepared for review.

And just when she thought she had retired
from public office… former El Segundo
Mayor Suzanne Fuentes received a special
invitation last week from Washington, D.C.
to join in a Cinco de Mayo program in our
nation’s capital. She accepted and hopped on
a plane. Fuentes joined 50 Hispanic Republicans
from multiple states and Puerto Rico
to hear Mexico’s Ambassador to the United
States Geronimo Gutierrez Fernández, United
States Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta,
Treasurer of the United States Jovita Carranza
and White House Press Secretary Sarah
Huckabee Sanders speak about America’s
long history with Mexico. The photo shows
Fuentes with Sanders.
