Obituaries
Pastor John Newton Svendsen
Pastor John Newton Svendsen
was born on February 25, 1956
- April, 13, 2019, former pastor
of First Baptist Church in
El Segundo, CA graduated to
Heaven on Saturday, April 13,
in Portland, OR.
John’s life was one of sacrificial
giving to anyone in need, whether
reconciling a couple in a marriage
conflict to giving you a place to
stay in his home. John lived a
simple but profound life. He did not have
much to be impressed with in his wardrobe
and did not care what kind of car was in his
driveway, but he adorned himself with someone
that meant the world to him, his Savior, Jesus.
Those that knew him well knew that more
than anything, he labored tirelessly that others
would know this Savior. What people saw in
John was the love of Jesus shining through.
He was born to Charles and Audrey (Talbot)
Svendsen. He was the fourth of four
children. He grew up in La Canada, CA as a
pastor’s kid and as such frequently tested his
parent’s resolve. He knew God was calling
him into the ministry while in high school.
This ministry began with a coffee house in
his parent’s garage. After graduation he attended
Glendale Community College before
transferring to Covenant College on Lookout
Mountain, Georgia. He continued
his theological education at Westminster
Seminary, Philadelphia
and Fuller Seminary, Pasadena.
He then began a nearly 40 year
ministry pastoring churches
which spanned from Community
Bible Evangelical Free Church in
Queens, New York 1981-1986,
Westminster Congregational
Church Canterbury, Connecticut
1986-1989 to First Baptist Church
El Segundo 1990-2017.
He married Susan Gausselin on June 24,
1995. He is survived by his wife Susie; his
siblings Elisabeth (Svendsen) Mills (John
Mills), Charles Svendsen, Mary (Svendsen)
Mendoza; his nephew, Andrew Mills, and
two nieces, Sarah Pluister and Rachel Seyfert,
Mariam (Chkadua) Eggler and Aleks
Chkadua; and a host of friends and neighbors
who loved him dearly.
John is the author of Preaching to the Choir,
Why Christians Need to Hear the Gospel Too
and Reflections of a Cancer Patient available
on Amazon.com. A memorial service will
be held on Sunday, May 5th at 3pm in New
City Church, 591 E. Palm Ave, El Segundo,
CA. The family requests memorial gifts be
given to whatever church you attend and
designated for MISSIONS. •
