low-scoring game, but with Quin Kirsten on
the mound all El Segundo needed was a first
inning run and then go on to win 4-0. Casillas
led the offense by going 2-4 with a triple and
run scored, while Romero also had two hits
including an RBI single.
For the first time since 1998, the Eagles
advanced to the Redondo Sea Hawk Tournament.
El Segundo has won this prestigious
tournament in 1986, 1992, 1994 and 1998. It
was also the first time since 2007 the Eagles

had advanced to a tournament final when they
won the El Segundo tournament.
The Eagles would face El Camino Real, one
of the top City Section teams, in the final. El
Segundo’s seven-game win streak was snapped
when the Conquistadors put together two big
innings to go on to a 10-1 win.
El Segundo had its share of scoring opportunities,
but its rallies were cut short when
Conquistador pitcher Ethan Glassman induced
two double plays. The Eagles’ lone run came
in the fourth inning. Trailing 4-0, Brendan
McAndrews singled and later scored on Cam
Dornblaser’s RBI single. The Eagles ended up
loading the bases when Dylan Marquez-Wasson
drew a walk. An inning-ending double play
put a stop to what could have been a big rally.
Eagle starter Cam Dornblaser took a sizzling
batted ball off the leg but stayed in the game.
He was replaced in the fifth inning by Ethan
Burner, who gave up three runs. In the sixth
inning, Chance Nelson came in to quiet the
Conquistadors.
The Eagles faced Santa Monica on Tuesday
and a win would give them the Ocean League
title outright. They wind up their regular season
schedule today against Santa Monica at 4 p.m.
at LMU. It is the first game of a doubleheader
of the Brett Mendoza Classic. Palos Verdes and
Peninsula will be playing at 7 p.m.
Softball Team on a
Roll Despite Injuries
The Eagles are showing just how deep they
are. With games against Edison of Huntington
Beach and Mira Costa, they were playing
without two of the team’s top hitters. Adri
Hebert and Julia Chavez were out all week
due to injuries and missed both games. So
head coach Megan McCann turned to her
bench and the results were two wins over
solid programs. Shanai Owens took over at
first base for Chavez and Mya Bennett took
over at third base for Hebert.
Trailing 1-0 in the sixth inning to Edison,
the Eagles scored four runs and went on to
win 4-2. In the big inning, Katie Croxall had
a two-run single. Kaela Little had an RBI
double and Erin Graner had an RBI single.
Kaili Reitano threw a complete game, scattering
four hits, walking one and striking out four.
The win over Mira Costa wasn’t a surprise,
but the 11-0 victory over the top team from the
Bay League was. The Eagles started slowly offensively
and led 1-0 in the third inning. Owens
was aboard on an error and later scored on a
sacrifice fly by Audrey Butler’s long fly ball.
In the fourth inning, Mya Bennett and Laila
Phillips each singled and Kaila Little was hit by
a pitch to load the bases. Owens’ two-run single
highlighted the three-run inning and a 4-0 lead.
The Eagles came up with the big sevem-run
fifth inning to dismantle the Mustangs. Sophia
Marrero led off the inning with a walk, followed
by Kaili Reitano’s RBI double. Phillips’
RBI single made it 6-0 and the rout continued
with Kelly Carignan’s infield single and an
error that led to another run. Katie Croxall
hammered an RBI double to make it 9-0.
The Eagles batted around and Marrero had
an RBI single and Reitano RBI single gave
her team an 11-0 lead.
With Reitano in the circle, Mira Costa
had no answer and literally no offense.
She held the Mustangs to just one hit and
walked two while letting her defense play. The
only hit was a sinking line drive that Kaila Little
dived for and nearly made the circus catch.
The Eagles faced Lawndale on Monday and
concluded their regular season against Santa
Monica yesterday on Senior Day. Should the
Eagles sweep, they’ll repeat as Ocean League
champions. The CIF playoffs start next week
for the 10th-ranked Eagles, who should host
a first round game.
Boys Volleyball Still in the Mix
The Eagles faced Santa Monica on Tuesday
in a showdown for first place. El Segundo’s
only loss in Ocean League play was to the
Vikings when they fell three games to two.
The Eagles would need to defeat the Vikings
and then defeat Lawndale to be co-champions.
Nevertheless the Eagles will advance to the
CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs
starting next week.
Around Town
The annual Kemer Brett Memorial Golf
Tournament is set for Friday at Chester Washington
Golf Course. The after-hacking party
will be held at the Old Town Patio afterwards.
The annual alumni baseball game is set for
this Saturday at noon. A 30-year reunion of
the 1989 CIF champion baseball team will
take place after the game at The Tavern on
Main and all are invited to attend.
Also on Saturday is the Run for Education
5K and 10K races that wind along the streets
of El Segundo. Plan accordingly since many
