over South Torrance. The Eagles fell behind
early to the Spartans, but that changed with
a pass from Annika Klishnevich to Trinity
Parascandola, who drove the ball into the
net to tie the game. In the second half, Bella
Munoz had inside position on a rebound and
drove it into the goal for a 2-1 El Segundo
advantage. Midway through the second half

The Eagles played host to Mira Costa and
came away with a disappointing 8-4 loss. The
Eagles found themselves trailing 1-0 in the
fourth inning when Nick Bacura clubbed a
solo home run. They extended their lead to
2-0 in the fifth Inning before El Segundo
scored four runs on one hit and took the
benefit of five walks and a hit batter to take
a 4-2 lead. The Mustangs offense woke up
and scored back-to-back three-run innings
in the sixth and seventh innings each. The
Eagles went quietly in the final two innings
and fell to the Mustangs 8-4.
The Eagles had their chances against
four Mustang pitchers but couldn’t find
a timely hit and left five runners in scoring
position. Kenny Chung started for the
Eagles but was lifted after his 92-pitch effort
wasn’t good enough. His line was good
enough to win, but not when the offense
failed to score runs for him. He gave up
two earned runs on six hits and struck out
six in his five innings. Jake Stolnack took
the loss after giving up six runs (one earned)
on three hits.
The Eagles faced the Birmingham Patriots
in a tournament game on the road and fell
10-8. The Eagles took an 8-1 lead into the
sixth inning and seemingly were on their
way to victory. The Patriots’ five-run rally
in the bottom of the sixth closed the gap to
8-6. In the bottom of the seventh, the wheels
fell off, and the Patriots seized the moment
by scoring four runs, including a two-run
walk-off home run for the win.

Ungaro’s layup gave El Segundo their first
lead. The two teams were tied at halftime
thanks to some clever dribbling and shooting
by Leila Sugimoto, who had 16 of her
game-high 24 points in the first half.
In the second half, Noble’s layup, midway
through the third quarter, gave her team a
34-33 lead they would not surrender. In the
closing moments of the game, Noble scored
on a layup to make it 43-38 with 35 seconds
remaining, but the Sea Kings cut it to 43-41
a short time later. After the Eagles turned the
ball over, the Sea Kings had a chance to tie
or take the lead, but Sugimoto intercepted
a pass and was immediately fouled with
three seconds remaining. She calmly sank
two free throws, and the Eagles came away
with the win.
The Eagles hosted former Ocean League
foe Culver City and earned a 45-34 win. El
Segundo once ended Culver City’s record
41-game Ocean League winning streak on
January 15, 2016. Since that game, these two
teams have played each other nine times,
with the Centaurs defeating the Eagles in
eight of them.
El Segundo rarely trailed in this game that
at times got physical. In the third quarter,
Kristen Tsubaki hit a long-range three-pointer
followed by Nicole Ungaro’s short-range
jumper. Bo Takehara’s three-pointer gave the
Eagles their largest lead of the game. In the
fourth quarter, El Segundo kept up their game
plan of playing a tight man-to-man defense.
Sugimoto’s two free throws down the stretch
iced the game for the Eagles, and they came
away with the impressive win.

Sitting in Quarantine
The Eagles have been idle since one of their
players tested positive for the Covid virus.
According to head coach David March, the
team will not play again until April 28. “I
feel really bad for the team. They were just
turning the corner physically and get real
dialed in on defense,” he said.
