Eagles Look Competitive
By Gregg McMullin
With nearly all of Season II sports back in
action, the El Segundo Eagles have seized
the moment by continuing their competitive
ways. The baseball team is on a roll, and
the softball team was idle while the boys’
basketball team opened their season with a
win. The soccer teams are off to a slow start
while the football team’s woes continue.
Julian Rodriguez Leads Eagles
The baseball team is finding their way after
a slow start to begin the season. With their
impressive 6-2 win over Bishop Montgomery,
the Eagles evened their season record to 4-4.
It was a different story the first these two
teams played. This time, the Knights couldn’t
capitalize on their home field advantage of
wind and cold, resulting in a 1-0 win over the
El Segundo. This time around, the Eagles took
advantage of the wildness of Knight’ starter
Brody Lieble. He hit Brendan McAndrews
and Evan Smith to start the game, and Julian
Rodriguez, who was 2-for-3, doubled both
runners in, and the Eagles had a 2-0 lead.
The Knights put together a two-run rally
in the third inning. With two outs, Kahlil
Brittenum reached an error, followed by
Cole Blumenthal’s single. Both scored on Ian
Draves’ two-run single to tie the game. The
Eagles responded in their half of the third
inning when Evan Smith singled and scored
on Rodriguez’s run-scoring single. The Eagles
padded their lead with Rafael Smith’s RBI
single. Leading 4-2 in the sixth inning, the
Eagles added two more runs when Marquise
Wright scored on McAndrews’ RBI single
on Evan Smith’s RBI single to make it 6-2.
Jake Stolnack picked up his second win
with a complete game 5-hitter and lowered
his ERA to a team best, among starters, to
0.30. In his three starts, Stolnack has limited
the opposition to a .157 batting average.
Soccer Teams hit a Snag
This year’s girl’s soccer team returns 11
players, including five all-Ocean League
players Natacha Lee, Annika Nelson, Katie
Callahan, Michaela Turner and Trinity Parascandola.
The defense is anchored by Lee,
Dalia Ramirez, Lizzie Kapoor and Callahan,
while Nili Kovacs returns in goal. Unfortunately,
the team lost Abby Martinez, another
standout on defense, due to an injury.
Midfield will consist of Parascandola,
Turner, Charlie Gerson, Makana Burns and
Savannah Schartz. The attacking line is full
of talented athletes starting with leading
scorer Chelsea Charles and Jaden Fode, Ciara
Doggett, Annika Klishevich and Marisa
Herrera.
The Eagles opened their season with a 4-2
win over North Torrance. Trinity Parascandola
scored early in the first half, and Chelsea
Charles powered one in from the right side.
With the game tied 2-2 in the second half,
Charles hammered one past a diving Saxon
goalie to make it 3-1. Five minutes later,
Jaden Fode found an opening and pushed
the ball in for another goal, and the Eagles
came away with a 4-2 win.
El Segundo met their match against Torrance,
which used their speed and great
defense to hold off the Eagles 3-1. The Eagles
