The boys’ U10 advanced to the state tournament but fell 3-0 in a tough match to San Luis Obispo. With the boys’ and girls’ high school soccer teams’ recent success and El Segundo’s AYSO’s all-star teams doing so well in recent years, soccer is quickly becoming a sport that other communities are staring to envy. Eagles Baseball The El Segundo Eagles lost a heartbreaker 6-5 to the Hart Indians in the first round of the Redondo Tournament. El Segundo led 5-4 going into the seventh when the Indians scored twice and held on to defeat the Eagles. The Eagles faced Mira Costa in a double-header earlier this week and play Torrance on Monday and South Torrance on Tuesday; both games are slated for 6pm first pitch. The El Segundo Frosh Soph baseball team extended their winning streak to six games before losing the second game of a doubleheader to Redondo. The Eagles defeated Palos Verdes 6-0 with Nico Celestial on the mound; he scattered two hits and walked four in six strong innings. Evan O’Connor, Noah Ruedas, Hunter Lynch, and Justin Mostert had two hits apiece to lead the 11 hit attack. O’Connor and Ruedas drove in 2 runs each. El Segundo pounded Redondo 9-1 in the first game of a doubleheader. Ryan Sullivan, Shane Salzman, and Ryan Maryoung each scored two runs while Ruedas led the Eagles with two hits and three RBI’s. Maryoung picked up the win limiting Redondo to one unearned run in five innings. Hunter Lynch tossed two shutout innings to close the game. The Eagles were not quite so fortunate in the nightcap. They managed seven hits and four walks but fell 5-1. Celestial and Jimmy Galicia led El Segundo with two hits each. Jake Nichols drove in the only run with a fielder’s choice. Galicia gave up three earned runs, struck out seven and had no walks. Boys Lacrosse The boys’ lacrosse team posted two league victories and a tough non-league loss this past week starting with a 16-10 home victory over Downey. On Wednesday the Eagles traveled to Brentwood with JV goalie Alex Nolan filling in a 16-19 loss. Last Friday the Eagles traveled to Beverly Hills for an exciting 17-14 win powered by eight goals from senior Nolan Roles. “The Ocean League is competitive and we have yet to play Culver City, but I feel that we are in the hunt,” said Coach Brooks Roscoe. “The boys are working hard and we’re firing on all cylinders.” El Segundo Run for Education Results The 24th Annual El Segundo Run for Education 5K and 10K presented by BIG 5 Sporting Goods is the major fundraiser for the El Segundo Unified School District. It offers one of the more unique USA Track & Field certified road courses in Southern California and it draws in participants to El Segundo from both near and far. Nearly 1500 runners took to the streets for the 5K/10K Run. With perfect conditions on hand and a challenging course for runners the race was another huge success for organizers. One thousand and fifty-four El Segundo residents took part in either the 5K or 10K race. The four oldest runners were 85 year young Dennis Williams, 84 year old Dick Windishar, 82 year old Gwendolyn Bartlett and 80 year old Jeanie Pelzman, In the 5K race, Aaron Frank was the first El Segundo resident to cross the finish line and placed second overall; Frank blistered the course in 19:03. Amy Shertzer continued her impressive showing at the El Segundo Run for Education. For the fourth consecutive year she was the quickest female resident to cross the 5K finish line. She did it in 19:57 this year and besting last year’s finish by 20 seconds. Of the top five female runners four were from El Segundo. Besides Shertzer, Amanda Burke, Gabby Lee and Victoria Samia were all in the top five and each won their age group. The other was none other than 7-year old Megan Crum from Lake Elsinore. On the male side besides Aaron Frank’s second place finish there were five others who finished in the top ten including Goran DaSilva, Duke Durand, Elliot Bijlsma, William Jordan and Nolan Sharp. The 11-year old Durand smoked the course in 19:40 or an average of 6:19 per mile.
