El Segundo Beach
problem. Help by bringing a bag and picking
up what you can. It makes a difference!
El Segundo possesses a beautiful and valuable
asset. El Segundo Beach. Many of us enjoy
relaxing, walking, swimming, running, fishing,
etc. There is a flaw in this jewel. Specifically
large amounts of trash and plastic washed in or
left by visitors. Despite the El Segundo Beach
sign the city does little to maintain and clean
the beach. This is one of the few beaches in
Los Angeles County that does not contract with
the County to rake the sand. The result is the
tide pulls the trash back out or plastic remains
and gets mixed into the sand. It now becomes
a permanent part of the beach. Chevron has
a crew that hand rakes the beach. They can
only do so much. Chevron is a good neighbor
and deserves our thanks. The city neglecting
their shared responsibility is a shame. When
you go to the beach, take a walk and see the

Response to Garland Letter
Obviously my metaphorical aspirations
concerning the detriment to multiple story
structures by the bombardment of the species
isoptera (termites) and the slow but pernicious
venomous corruption of local government had
an unfortunate vacuous penetration on letter
writer Mr. John Garland as I vainly attempted
to illustrate an economic corollary between
wicked, corrupt local government and the
deprivation and deterioration of a citizens
political and economic freedom in America.
Incidentally, “air ball” is not listed in any
of my dictionaries. What is an “air ball”?

Obituaries
In loving memory of Steve Sturgeon
November 16, 1941- February 14, 2019.
Steve was born November 16,
1941 in Santa Monica, California.
Steve was a long time resident
of El Segundo, graduate of El
Segundo High School class of
1960, and retired Hawthorne
Police Officer. Steve was very
active growing up- he played
baseball and football, but his true
passion was racing. Steve raced
dragsters at Lions Drag Strip in
Long Beach and San Fernando
Raceway, with his father and brothers. When
Steve became a father, he passed on his passion
for racing to his three children, and as
a family they spent every weekend racing
sprint cars or motocross. Later in life, his
love for racing changed a bit and developed
into a passion for collecting cars
of all sizes- from Hot Wheels to
his 1934 Ford, Steve loved them
all. Steve owned multiple hobby
shops around the South Bay and
was always someone who could
sit and talk or listen for hours on
end- making him a trusted and
reliable friend to many.
Steve is survived by his wife of
58 years, Kris Sturgeon, brothers
Jess and Doug, daughters Kelly
and Kim, grandchildren- Megan, Steven and
Haley and Great Grandchild, Olivia. Funeral
services will be held on Saturday, March 2,
2019 at 11:00 am at Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter Day Saints: 1215 E. Mariposa Ave,
El Segundo, CA 90245. •

Community members joined the West Basin
Municipal Water District Board of Directors
at a special board meeting and reception on
Feb. 13 to recognize Division II Director
Gloria D. Gray as the newly elected Chairwoman
of Metropolitan Water District of
Southern California.
Gray, who was officially sworn in as
Chairwoman on Jan. 8, is the first African
American to lead the 38-member Metropolitan
board, and only the second woman to serve
as Chair in its 90-year history. Water industry
leaders and elected officials, including Mayor
James T. Butts of Inglewood, Los Angeles
City Council President Herb J. Wesson,
former Chair of the State Water Resources
Control Board Felicia Marcus, Los Angeles
Unified School District Board Member Dr.
George McKenna III, Eastern Municipal
Water District Board Member and Immediate
Past Chair of the Metropolitan Board of
Directors Randy Record, and Metropolitan
General Manager Jeff Kightlinger each spoke
in support of Gray’s new leadership role in
regional water policy.
First elected in 2006, Gray represents
West Basin’s Division II that includes the
city of Inglewood and the unincorporated
Los Angeles County areas of Lennox, South
Ladera Heights, West Athens and Westmont.
During the special board meeting, each of
West Basin’s Directors shared comments with
the public recognizing Gray’s leadership and
successes with the District that includes nearly
one million people served in 17 cities and
unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.
The board addressed the importance of West
Basin’s partnership with Metropolitan, and the
two agencies’ shared commitment to ensuring
future reliability of local water supplies
through the advancement of recycled water,
conservation, education and other programs
designed for the communities they serve.
